Williams technical director Mike Coughlan says he is not expecting tyres to create such a lottery in the early races as they did in 2012.

Last season saw seven different winners from the first seven grands prix as teams struggled to keep the Pirelli tyres in their optimal working range. At the second test in Barcelona many drivers have highlighted how difficult it is to carry out long runs due to the tyre degradation, but Coughlan has no concerns about how big a challenge they will be.

"No, no I think they're OK," Coughlan said. "We have a better knowledge of the tyre now and the people; the questions to ask and the models to look at. So I think we'll get to the point where we can get the performance out of the tyre earlier. The one thing you don't have is the temperature here so you've got to be a little bit cautious, we're going to go to Melbourne - it could be 35 degrees and we're going from 15 - so there's that, but I think ultimately tyre understanding will come quicker. I hope so!"

Coughlan also said that last year's experience would help all the teams, but admitted Williams may have a slight advantage having analysed the 2013 tyres with its old car at Jerez.

"I think in all cases when you actually have a better understanding initially of the tyres you migrate more quickly towards a solution. To begin with we didn't plan to do Jerez at all, we only did Jerez because Pirelli were bringing their new tyres and we felt it would even be better with the old car so that we had a known platform. I'm sure a lot of people who went to Jerez with a new car, new driver and new tyres, got lost. We didn't."
