The AT&T Williams F1 have today confirmed the return of Renault engines to the team. Renault will supply their current V8 units for the 2012 & 2013 seasons with a view to continuing in 2014 with the new turbocharged V6 engines. The partnership is viewed as an exciting opportunity for both parties.

Renault Sport F1 and Williams F1 are delighted to announce a long-term chassis‐engine partnership. Renault Sport F1, the F1 division of Renault, will supply AT&T Williams with its championship‐winning V8 power units for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In addition to the supply of its Formula One engines, the newly‐formed alliance includes several other exciting business and marketing opportunities, with a view to continuing after the introduction of the new, energy efficient, turbocharged V6 engines arrive in the sport in 2014.

The partnership is an exciting opportunity for both Renault Sport F1 and AT&T Williams. The original Anglo-French alliance enjoyed a hugely successful association between 1989 and 1997, yielding four Drivers' and five Constructors' titles and 63 race wins. It also produced some of the most evocative images of the 1990s, including Nigel Mansell's British Grand Prix win in 1992; Alain Prost's fourth world title and the classic duels between Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher.

Renault Sport F1 president, Bernard Rey, commented, "Renault remains in Formula One to achieve success in a cost efficient way and the partnership with Williams has great potential to add to the results we have notched up over recent years with our other partner teams. Williams has recently taken several important steps, both commercially and technically, to update its operations and we feel that this partnership is another important step in its rigorous plan. It reiterates how determined the team is to achieve results, which matches perfectly with our own objectives.

From 2012 onwards the fact that we will have four partners puts us ahead of other engine manufacturers in terms of market share, but off track it will also enable us to further use Formula One as a marketing platform for our parent company, Renault, to try to bring a bit of this association to our fans and our customers worldwide.

Of course there's also a great pride in reviving the Williams-Renault name. Together, we produced racing cars that are recognised for their technical innovation and it is still Renault's most successful period in F1 to date. It's a hugely exciting opportunity for both Renault and Williams.”

Frank Williams, Team Principal of AT&T Williams, added, "We are delighted and excited by our new partnership with Renault. This reunites the F1 team with a leading car manufacturer and complements our new relationship with Jaguar. At the same time, we are grateful to Cosworth: they have been a fair and reliable partner both on and off the track for the past two years and we look forward to working with them across our business in the future.

"Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams’ history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past. We must look to the future and continue to re‐build our on‐track reputation, which I am hopeful that today’s announcement will help us to do."

About the Williams‐Renault partnership
Williams and Renault launched their first challenger in 1989 with Renault developing a brand new 3.5l normally aspirated V10 engine for the changed engine regulations. In its first year of competition, the partnership won two Grands Prix and laid the foundations for the following year’s car, the FW14, which was to go down in F1 legend as one of the greatest ever chassis‐engine packages. So successful in fact that three iterations of the chassis were made, including the FW14B that dominated F1 in 1992, winning 10 of the 16 races and powering Nigel Mansell to the championship title as early as the mid‐season Hungarian Grand Prix.

Mansell's was to be the first of the partnership's four drivers' titles, the others coming in 1993 (Prost) and then 1996 (Hill) and 1997 (Villeneuve), and five constructors' titles (1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997).

Outside F1, Williams and Renault also collaborated on a touring car project in which Renault Lagunas were developed and raced in the British Touring Car Championship. Again, success came quickly and the partnership won all three Championships in 1997: the Drivers', Manufacturers' and Team Trophies.  The partnership also designed and built the iconic Renault Clio Williams, one of the most prized hot‐hatches of a generation.

I like Cosworth and it's a shame we couldn't win with them.

Good news though

the team will have competitive teams as benchmark.

Sam out... Cosworth out ... in theory , two problems solved .

It seems that they are reading this forum, at least.

OK, this is starting to look good. Renault should be right there when the turbos come in. I'm really happy about the changes at the team of late. I feel all the team really needs is a big fish principle like PH or Brawn, or Dennis. Kolles would do I think. Someone who doesn't compromise one inch.

Plus, we do need at least one proper driver but this may come if the team shows promise in 12 /13.

Mount a championship challenge in 2014? That has to be the gameplan.

I'm rather expecting Pastor to come good. He's doing OK at the moment. He seems quite mature and self-confident. I think we'll have two 'proper drivers' in 2012. Not superstars, perhaps, but pretty sound.

whilst this is all good news...relatively speaking i would suggest a note of caution. the clock cannot be turned back and nostalgic memories do not win races now or in the future.

considering where williams were just a few months ago in the 'future stakes' this is a breath of fresh air and i will not pour cold water on it. however i will just wait and see where the fine print takes the team and then pass judgment.

It can't do any harm to have a competitive engine after our recent experiences with Cosworth, Toyota, and Cosworth.

Williams and proud of it.

I am really glad of the changes the team are making , i was really starting to lose my interest in the sport.

I know there is a lot of hard work to do , and results will not come overnight , but the team have done what we have asked at last.

If it still does not work for them atleast i know they tried.

Good Luck Williams.

I think the important point is that none of these moves will save Williams. But the combination with appropriate direction and resource might well do the trick.

Rubens has said the team is already fizzing again following the announcements and initial meetings with Coughlan.

That is the best sign so far.

LOL I think we ought to convince Renault to shell out a few Euros for a yellow Airbox. I'd love that.

I know lots of us prefer a Rothmans-esque livery but for me ita all about Camel/Canon smiling smiley

Well done Williams, nice to see the champions and SFW and PH and everybody (sans Michael) do the press conference.

Today's Williams Renault is completely different from the 90s version. It's been a good partnership but that doesn't mean success will be immediate, if at all.

Definitely a move in the right direction, great job, but I won't turn romantic just yet.

Are we paying for the engine or do we get them free?

We should get them free after SFW gave Renault a reference. For loyalty if nothing else.

Williams and proud of it.

The smart thinking here is that Renault have serious background in high performance turbo engines, and V6 motors. They could without doubt build the best of the V6 turbos from the off.

If you had to put money on one company getting the new engine right, I would put mine on Renault.

Just been reading on James Allen's site, and he was asked what the team entry name will be, Williams Renault or still AT&T Williams.

he said he believes they will be called AT&T Williams Renault

If so that's great news!

Re: Williams Renault Partnership Revived

If it will be AT&T Williams Renault, it's mean that it will be closer partnership than just providing engines or just that Williams tries to attract sponsors thanks to legendary partnership. I hope first option is true.
We hadn't Toyota nor Cosworth in our full name last few years as well as Red Bull Racing and Team Lotus haven't Renault in their's names at the moment. So the fact is that normal engine deal doesn't change the name of the team, so if this deal does, it should be something beyond.

However I will wait to see official Williams F1 name for 2012.

It may happen, why not? Saward made an interesting comment: that Renault did not get much publicity from RBR's championship win. And it is invisible on the car. But Williams - Renault is an identifiable brand. You also then have the red, blue and yellow of the Venezuelan flag to play with.

A very interesting thread has been started by THIAGO F1.

He quotes a blog that claims that Renault will only supply three teams with engines in 2011. RenaultF1 will use Cosworth engines. Interesting.

Williams and proud of it.

Been reading the latest autosport which obviously covers the new Williams Renault deal, and an interesting piece of info popped up in it. Apparently Renault want only two manufacturer teams when the engines convert to the V6 turbos, and it's quite likely they want Williams to prove themselves worthy of full works backing in time for when these new engine regs come.
