With the BMW WilliamsF1 team gearing up for another round of testing, commencing next Tuesday November 26th in Valencia, these tests will be another step in the further development of BMW's P83 V10 engine.

Dr Mario TheissenFor BMW Motorsport Director Dr Mario Theissen the steps already taken in regard to the development of the new engine form part of the teams aim to develop a car that can challenge Ferrari in 2003.

Dr Theissen, on the BMW Motorsport web site, was quoted as saying that the new engine is a part of development of the new car but there are also other components that have to be perfected if the BMW WilliamsF1 team is going to have a competitive car in 2003.

In regard to the P83 engine Theissen said: “Everything works out according to our schedule. The P83, the engine for the 2003 season, already ran on July 31 in Munich on the test bench and on September 18 for the first time in the car.”

He added: “The engine is the unit that BMW is primarily in charge of, but naturally this is not the sole decisive factor. Chassis and tyres have to be continually developed further in order to boost the BMW WilliamsF1 Team to the top."

For BMW the development of the P83 engine is aimed at ensuring that BMW maintains their strong position of been one of the best engines in Formula One.

Dr Theissen spoke of this by saying: “Not only in 2001, but also in 2002 did we succeed in building one of the strongest engines in Formula 1 here in Munich. This is the core competence of BMW and, of course, we want to defend this leading position.”
