Hungarian GP: Double points for Williams in race

Nico in sixth

For the AT&T Williams team the 2010 HUngarian GP would produce a double points scoring finish with 6th and 10th place finishes. It was a great performance from Nico Hulkenberg who would finish in sixth, always running in the top ten. Rubens Barrichello was let down somewhat by his strategy and a Safety Car but he did not give up and secured tenth, also a great performance.

 Hungarian GP Race Review

With the drivers facing a very long run down to the first corner the start would be vital for both AT&T Williams drivers as passing during the race would be very difficult. Nico Hulkenberg would start from tenth and Rubens Barrichello in twelfth. Nico would be starting on the super soft tyres and Rubens the harder tyre on an opposing strategy. Vettel was on pole followed by Webber, Alonso, Massa, Hamilton, Rosberg, Petrov, Kubica, De la Rosa, and Nico in tenth. The grid would move away on their parade lap for the seventy lap race. The day was sunny with the track temperature a hot 45 degrees. Sauber driver Kobayashi was given a five place grid penalty for not attending qualifying scrutineering.

HulkenbergBoth Nico and Rubens would be staring from the dirty side of the track, hopefully this would not ruin their chances of making a good start. The grid would form up with Vettel taking his place on pole. The lights would go out and it would be Vettel leading with Alonso in second. Webber was in third with Massa fourth with both Williams cars running close together. Rubens was in ninth and Nico tenth. Massa had Petrov and Hamilton following with Rosberg in seventh. From twenty third Kobayashi was up to sixteenth. Petrov was defending against Hamilton and Rosberg was doing the same with Kubica. Button was down in fifteenth. Hamilton would pass Petrov at Turn two as Vettel set a fastest lap with a 1m:28.362. Alguersuari would retire with an engine failure.

Two laps completed and Vettel was an amazing 2.5 seconds ahead of Alonso. Rubens and Nico were still running close together. Lap three and a 1m:27.883 from Vettel with his lead now 2.9 seconds. Rubens was right behind Kubica as Vettel again went fastest on lap four with a 1m:26.744. Vettel was totally dominating the race with his lead now 3.9 seconds. Webber was running right with Alonso but he was now 5.8 seconds behind his team-mate. Vettel would keep pushing setting a 1m:26.518 on lap six as he extended his lead to 6.3 seconds. Everyone was setting personal bests but no one could come close to Vettel. Thirteenth placed Schumacher was complaining about his brakes while Rubens would drop back from Kubica with the Renault now 2.0 seconds ahead after lap seven. Nico would
continue to run behind his team-mate.

BarrichelloLap eight and a 1m:26.246 from Vettel while Alonso's time was a 1m:27.185. Vettel's lead was now 7.9 seconds. Webber must be very frustrated to be dropping so far off Vettel given the pace that he should be able to get out of his car. It would most likely come down to the pitstops. Lap nine and Vettel was leading by 8.5 seconds while Rubens had closed a few tenths onto Kubica. Nico was now 1.3 seconds behind Rubens while the only car that was challenging for a position was Kubica running behind Rosberg. Lap thirteen and Vettel was now leading by 11.0 seconds while Yamamoto would be lapped by the leader on lap fourteen. Vettel would complete this lap setting a 1m:26.211 to now be 11.7 seconds in front of Alonso.

Button would pit on lap fifteen from fifteenth place followed by Liuzzi. Liuzzi would get a new nose while on lap sixteen Vettel would pit as the Safety Car came out. Alonso, Massa, Hamilton, Petrov, Rosberg, Kubica, Nico, De la Rosa, Sutil, Schumacher, and Buemi would all pit. There would be contact between Sutil and Kubica in the pit lane while Rosberg would stop at the end of the pit lane with no right rear tyre. It was a clear mistake by the Renault team releasing Kubica back out into the pit lane. Kubica would get his car started but would have to wait at the end of the pit lane. Webber had not stopped while we would see Vettel going over the kerbs to enter the pit lane as soon as he knew that the Safety Car was coming out. Rosberg's rear tyre would find its way into the Williams garage after been stopped by mechanics.

BarrichelloThe Safety Car would come in on lap eighteen with Webber leading from Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Massa, with Rubens in sixth but having not stoped. Petrov was in seventh followed by Nico, De la Rosa, and Button in tenth. Kubica was now lapped while Sutil had retired in his pits. Rosberg was also out of the race while at the front Webber was really on it setting a new fastest lap on lap nineteen, 1m:25.648, to be 4.6 seconds in the lead. Rosberg would walk back to his pit while on lap twenty one Trulli would pit. Webber was aiming to open out a gap that would allow him to pit and come back out in front of the Ferrari's. Rubens would be facing the prospect of dropping way down the order when he makes his pit stop.

Lap twenty two and a 1m:24.788 from Webber. Kubica would be given a stop go penalty which he would take on lap twenty four while of more importance was seeing Hamilton, the championship leader, pulling off the circuit on lap twenty five retiring from the race. Rubens was now in fifth while it was announced that Vettel was under investigation for been over ten car lengths behind the Safety Car. Lap twenty five and Webber was leading by 6.2 seconds while Vettel would set a new fastest lap with a 1m:24.564. Kubica would retire in his pit while Nico was now in seventh. It was reported that Hamilton had a transmission issue with a loss of drive. Webber was leading Alonso by 12.4 seconds after lap twenty seven.

FW32It would be announced that Vettel would get a drive through penalty for his mistake of backing up the field. He would have two laps to take his penalty while Webber would have his lead over Alonso slightly reduced with Alonso 12.9 seconds behind. Vettel would ask why he was getting the drive through penalty and he would take his penalty on lap thirty two. Vettel would come back out in front of Massa so the order was now Webber from Alonso, Vettel, Massa, Rubens, Petrov, Nico, and De la Rosa. A 1m:24.315 from Webber on lap thirty two with his lead over Alonso now 14.3 seconds. After everyone thought that Vettel would walk away with this race the race had been turned on its head.

A 1m:24.091 from Webber to now be 16.1 seconds ahead of Alonso with his chances of winning the race getting better and better as he extended his lead. Another fastest lap with a 1m:23.847 from Webber with his lead now 17.6 seconds over Alonso. Vettel was in third 4.1 seconds behind Alonso. Massa was fourth followed by Rubens, Petrov, Nico, De la Rosa, Button, and Kobayashi in tenth. But for Rubens he would have to make a stop and this would see him drop back to around thirteenth. Lap thirty six and Webber's lead was now 18.6 seconds while Vettel was closing onto Alonso. Another 0.6 pulled over Alonso by Webber with his lead now 21.7 on lap thirty nine. Vettel was now 1.0 seconds behind Alonso while after lap forty Webber had a lead of 22.8 seconds over Alonso.

HulkenbergNico was 1.3 seconds behind Petrov and when Rubens pits would at least move up to sixth. Vettel was now challenging Alonso while Webber's lead was now 23.3 seconds. Lap forty two and Webber had pulled out another few tenths with his lead 23.7 seconds but on lap forty four Webber would pit. He would make a clean stop returning in the lead while team-mate Vettel was still trying to find a way past Alonso. The Red Bull mechanics celebrated the fact that they got Webber back out without any problems. Webber was now 6.1 seconds ahead of Alonso followed by Vettel, Massa, Rubens, Petrov, Nico, De la Rosa, Button, and Kobayashi in tenth. Webber would continue to open out his lead, 8.2 seconds, setting a 1m:23.118 on lap forty five.

A 1m:22.651 from Webber on his newer tyres with his lead out to 10.8 seconds on lap forty six. By lap forty eight his lead was out to 13.1 seconds ahead. It was hard to understand why Rubens had not pitted with just twenty laps remaining. Lap fifty two and Webber's lead was out to 17.5 seconds over Alonso while Vettel still could not find a way past the Ferrari. Nico was now 2.5 seconds behind Petrov while Rubens had still yet to pit. Vettel would run wide at Turn four dropping back from Alonso. But Nico would push a start to close onto Petrov while Rubens would pit on lap fifty seven. Rubens would take on the softer tyre for his run to the finish. He would come back out behind Schumacher in eleventh. It really did not work out for Rubens as he was 8.0 seconds behind the Mercedes.

Nico was now in sixth but he was now 2.7 seconds behind Petrov. Rubens was now 6.1 seconds behind Schumacher while Schumacher would be lapped by the leader. Rubens would close up onto Schumacher looking to secure that single point for tenth. Rubens had picked up a massive 3.7 seconds in one lap with the fight between Rubens and Schumacher well and truly on. Rubens was clearly faster but this track does not help in terms of passing. Rubens took a dive at Turn one but just could not get past and on the next lap Schumacher had opened out a bit of a lead. Webber was still leading from
Alonso, Vettel, Massa, Petrov, Nico, De la Rosa, Button, Kobayashi, and in tenth Schumacher.

HulkenbergRubens was so much faster in the slower corners but just could not get past. The was the same problem that Vettel was having with Alonso. Rubens would pull alongside Schumacher going down the main straight but the Mercedes would move across pushing Rubens closer and closer to the wall. Rubens would only just miss the end of the pit wall but thankfully he would get past the Mercedes. Why Schumacher did that move is hard to understand. Rubens would come on the radio saying that Schumacher should be blacked flagged and that his move was horrible. So we now had both Williams cars in the points with Nico sixth and Rubens tenth.

At the front it was Webber still leading from Alonso and Vettel. It was reported that Schumacher's move on Rubens would be investigated after the race. Webber would start his final lap and would go on to cross the finish line taking victory in the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix. He would now lead the drivers championship with this race win. The other places would not change with Alonso second from Vettel, Massa, Petrov, Nico, De la Rosa, Button, Kobayashi, and the last point would go to Rubens. For the AT&T Williams team the race would produce a double points coring finish which was a big turn around after the disappointment of Germany. It was a great performance from Nico would drove a great race always looking to be in the top ten. Rubens was let down somewhat by his strategy and the Safety Car but he did not give up and secure tenth, also a great performance.
