For the AT&T Williams team the results of qualifying for the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix would see their drivers start the race from eleventh and twelfth with Rubens Barrichello leading Nico Hulkenberg. It was not really expected to see either car make it into the final period of qualifying but come Sunday's race the prospect of both cars scoring points in the race that is not beyond reach.

 Canadian GP Qualifying

For the AT&T Williams team qualifying for the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix was most likely going to be a struggle for both drivers to make it into the final period after putting in far from impressive performances during the three practice sessions. Glock was first out running on the softer tyre. It was expected that the top ten would all use the harder tyre in the final period, as this would be the bets tyre to start the race. Glock would be joined by both Lotus cars, Petrov, and Di Grassi. Nico Hulkenberg was also out on the track early,
joined by team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

Glock would set a 1m:21.587 but he was quickly passed by Petrov with a 1m:20.210. Kovalainen was now second and Trulli fourth. Fourteen drivers were on the track as Glock moved up to second with a 1m:20.674. Chandhok was slowest with a 1m:27.757. Nico was fifth with a time of 1m:21.544 as more drivers left their pits. Trulli was now fastest with a 1m:19.896 with fifteen minutes remaining. Alguersuari was now fastest with a time of
1m:18.58 but he was easily beaten. Alonso was now fastest with a 1m:17.864 from Petrov, Sutil, and Nico in fourth, 1m:18.545. Rubens was down in ninth with a 1m:20.565. Sutil would move ahead of the Ferrari with a time of 1m:17.702. But Alonso would improve with a 1m:17.255 to again be fastest from Nico. Nico's time was a 1m:17.322. Liuzzi was now third from Sutil while Rubens had improved to now be in fifth, 1m:17.703.

But was more drivers set times the order would quickly change. Webber was now fastest but both Hamilton and Liuzzi would move ahead of him. Hamilton's time was a 1m:16.614. Webber was now third but this became fifth as Vettel moved into second from Button and then Liuzzi. Alonso was again fastest with a time of 1m:16.304 but Hamilton would move ahead with a 1m:15.889. Webber was now third from Vettel and Button. Both Williams
drivers were in their pits with Rubens eleventh, 1m:17.265, and Nico twelfth, 1m:17.322. They would both drop down one place when Rosberg moved into fourth, 1m:16.500. Hamilton and Webber had both pitted as Vettel moved into second, 1m:16.129.

So with seven minutes remaining it was Hamilton from Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, Button, Webber, Sutil, Schumacher, Massa, and Kubica in tenth. Both Red Bull cars were running on the softer tyre for this period. Rubens and Nico were both back out while Kubica moved up to eighth. With five minutes left in the period of the top eleven only Kubica was out on the track. Both of the Williams drivers were out on the softer tyre as they were close to the cut off zone. Nico's first lap would see him in eleventh with a time of 1m:16.770.
Rubens had dropped to fifteenth while Nico was now twelfth as Petrov moved into ninth. Kubica was now fifth with a time of 1m:16.370. Nico and Rubens continued to circulate as the period drew to a close. Nico would pit while Rubens was on an improved lap.

The period would end with Rubens setting a 1m:16.880 to move up to thirteenth, one place behind Nico. Those not making the cut were Kobayashi, Kovalainen, Trulli, Glock, Senna, Di Grassi, and Chandhok. At the front it was Hamilton from Vettel, Alonso, Rosberg, Kubica, Button, Webber, Sutil, Petrov, Schumacher, Massa, Nico, Rubens, Alguersuari, Liuzzi, Buemi, and in the last place De la Rosa. It was most unlikely that either Williams car would make it past the second period.

Petrov would be first out in the second period joined by Nico, Rubens and a rush of other drivers. Both Ferrari's were out on the track, joined by both McLaren's. Everyone except De la Rosa were now on the circuit with the majority of the drivers on the softer tyre. Petrov would set a time of 1m:23.526 after backing off. Liuzzi was fastest with a 1m:17.726 but Webber would move ahead, 1m:16.292. Vettel was now fastest , 1m:16.163, but like others he was beaten by Hamilton with a time of 1m:16.053. Alonso was now fastest with a 1m:15.594 but he was also passed by Kubica with a 1m:15.682.

On his next lap Vettel was again fastest with a 1m:15.556. Kubica was now second from Alonso, Rosberg, Webber, Hamilton, Massa, Sutil, Schumacher, and Button in tenth. Both Williams drivers had pitted with Rubens in twelfth, 1m:16.977, and Nico last in seventeenth, 1m:17.795. Button would improve to be ninth as Hamilton put himself back on top with a 1m:15.528. Both McLaren's were out on the harder tyre. Webber would join them and was back out on the harder tyre for his next run as only two drivers were on the track with six and a half minutes left in the period. Both Williams drivers were now back out, joined by Massa and both Torro Rosso cars. Nico would start an improved lap while despite been on the softer tyre Rubens was not showing any signs of improvement.

Buemi was up to twelfth seeing Rubens drop to thirteenth. Nico was still seventeenth but his next lap would see him up to eleventh with a time of 1m:16.618. Rubens was now fourteenth as Webber pitted with a minute remaining. Liuzzi was now ninth, 1m:16.423, with Nico and Rubens now twelfth and thirteenth. Button was up to seventh, 1m:16.157, while Nico was again on a better lap. Nico would set a time of 1m:16.438 to see him back in eleventh. Rubens next lap would see him move ahead of Nico with a time of 1m:16.434. So with the end of the period both Williams cars were in eleventh and twelfth and not making the cut as predicted. At least they had the satisfaction of beaten the Mercedes of Schumacher.

Those not making the cut were Rubens, Nico, Schumacher, Petrov, Buemi, Alguersuari, and De la Rosa. The top ten were Hamilton from Vettel, Alonso, Kubica, Webber, Button, Rosberg, Liuzzi, Sutil, and Massa. Overall it was a good performance from both Williams drivers despite not making it into the top ten. But the first of Sam Michael's hopes of seeing both cars in the top ten failed to take place. As for both cars scoring points that is not beyond reach.

The final period would commence with no one making a move to come out of the pit lane. First out was Button, running on the softer tyre, from team-mate Hamilton. Webber, Alonso, and Vettel would join them. Button would set a time of 1m:16,432 but Hamilton moved ahead with a 1m:15.500. Only Rosberg and Sutil were still in the pits. Button would pit joined by Hamilton. Alonso was third with a time of 1m:19.084 from Webber. Both Red Bull's were on the hard tyre as Vettel moved into fifth. Alonso was now second with a 1m:16.419 but he was beaten by Webber who was now second from Massa in third. Everyone except Hamilton were out on the track.

Webber's time was a 1m:15.990 but he was passed by Alonso with a 1m:15.685. Webber would find more time to go second, 1m:15.534, from Alonso, Button, Kubica, and Vettel. Vettel would make a mistake at the final chicane seeing him ruin his lap. Hamilton was back out while Webber went fastest with a 1m:15.379 having moved ahead of Alonso, 1m:15.435. Hamilton was third from Liuzzi, Button, Kubica, Sutil, and Vettel in eighth. Hamilton was out on the softer tyre as he started his final lap. Button was now fourth, 1m:15.520, while Vettel went into second, 1m:15.420. Hamilton continued his quicker lap and would move ahead of both Red Bull cars to go fastest with a time of 1m:15.105.

So it was pole from Hamilton from Webber, Vettel, Alonso, Button, Liuzzi, Massa, Kubica, Sutil, and Rosberg in tenth. For Sunday's race Hamilton would start the race on a different strategy running first on the softer tyre. Both Red Bull's will be on the harder tyre for the race start. Hamilton was told that he would not have enough fuel in his car to give a fuel sample so he was forced to shut down his engine and push his car back towards his pit. Hamilton would be picked up by a Safety car and taken back to the pit lane.

For the AT&T Williams team they will start the race from eleventh and twelfth with Rubens leading Nico. As for both cars scoring points in the race that is not beyond reach.
