WilliamsF1 dismisses reports of BMW input

Reports regarding BMW becoming involved in the design of the 2003 WilliamsF1 challenger have been circulating for a time, but recent reports have BMW sending a team of engineers to assist WilliamsF1.

It has been reported for sometime now that BMW has been far from happy with the WilliamsF1 FW24, in particular in its aerodynamics where it has failed to match that of Ferrari.

These reports have been described as "woefully inaccurate". That is not to say that both WilliamsF1 and BMW have not been at work looking at areas where assistance can be provided but they would not extend into the area of chassis development.

Jim Wright, WilliamsF1's head of marketing, in a recent interview with British magazine Autosport: "It's absolutely not true. Think about it logically. We are building what is a very specialist chassis in terms of carbon fibre. BMW have zero experience in terms of carbon fibre, so it doesn't make sense."

"Certainly we would like to work more closely with BMW's engineers in areas where we felt there would be a benefit to the team," said Wright. "We are wide open to help from BMW, because if it improves the car then we'll take help from wherever we can. There are a number of areas where BMW's assistance can help us. We have begun to identify those areas."

One could possibly understand BMW's frustration with the current FW24 chassis but given BMW's very limited experience in building a carbon fibre formula one chassis it does not make any sense for BMW to go the extent of sending engineers to assist WilliamsF1.
