 Rosberg hopeful for 2009

For the AT&T Williams team the 2009 Formula One season has seen the team drop down the order after a successful start to the season with a third place in Australia. One person to have struggled as a result of the Williams teams lack of performance was lead driver Nico Rosberg.

RosbergA view supported by former world champion Niki Lauda who said "He is being held back by the performance of his car, which is something he can't do anything about." F1 commentator Christian Danner, told RTL: "In my eyes Nico is a winner, so to me it is almost tragic that he is losing so much time at Williams."

But despite his 2008 season failing to deliver what he was hoping for the young German still has the prospect of turning his carer around in 2009 when Formula One will see a large number of changes including slick tyres, and a new aerodynamic package. But such is his disappointment in 2008 that it is only these changes that have given him hope for improvement.

In an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport Nico said: "Just because of the rules changes, otherwise I would have lost faith long ago." If 2009 turns out to be like 2008 Nico's reputation could suffer greatly.

But with the Williams team still without any manufacturer backing, despite using Toyota engines, and with the team potentially suffering financially from the financial crisis that has hit some of the teams major sponsors there is a real uphill battle for Williams to become competitive in 2009. This is something that Nico is probable fully aware of as the 2008 season comes to an end.

The question is asked as to why Nico did not look for an opportunity to leave Williams and move on to another team, something that could have helped his career.

Nico answered this by saying: "At the time I had a valid contract with Frank, and as I learned from my father, loyalty is an important value."

"Of course there are grey areas, and in Formula One you must exploit them now and then. But the signs were that staying with Williams was the right choice."

But one thing that Williams does give him is the ability to remain the teams lead driver rather than moving to another team when he may have to play a secondary role.

Nico added: "As a driver, first and foremost you want a good and competitive car. So if you are contractually able, you would have to accept an offer from a team like this."

"But there is a danger of having to play second fiddle, which would not be ideal as from the outset you would be fighting against so many other things rather than just driving fast."

Whatever was the basis for Nico's decision to remain at Williams for 2009 recent events affecting the financial position of some of Williams sponsors as well as the rumoured loss of long time sponsor Petrobras must be in his mind as to whether or not the Williams team is going to be in a position to turn their 2009 season around. Only time will tell.

Am i being honest with myself or just wishful thinking??

Maybe a bit of both, but that won,t hurt either way.

Good luck lads.

I'd rather Rosberg be optimistic instead of hopeful. But these days I'll take any positive thinking.

Go Williams. Fight above your weight.

Next season, if the car is capable of taking points from a circuit, Nico needs to take them. This season has been the worst one that I can recall. There have been races where we could and should have taken points. Along with races where drivers have had faultless weekends for no result. It has just been a bad bad season.

I don't care whether it is called optimism or hopefulness I just want to see a collective improvement all round.

Williams and proud of it.

I am looking forward to the new regs it may improve the teams chances but the car must suit all tracks which would be a big improvement

100% Williams
WILL SUPPORT WILLIAMS AS LONG AS We HAVE A TEAM To Support

The williams aero department is last but one out of all the teams this season ONLY. FORCE INDIA. ARE WORSE THAN US
That is a sad position to be in for such a great team.

This is not all about money you know this is about getting the right people for the job that applies to the designers aswell as the people in charge.

Well another season has gone by and Sam Micheal HAS LET US DOWN YET AGAIN.

WE HAVE DONE NO GOOD SINCE HE WAS PUT IN AS TD HOW MUCH LONGER WILL HE LAST HE IS KILLING THIS TEAM.

Toyota changed there TD for this season and look how they have turned things around is it not time we did the same ,he has had enough chances now to prove himself each time he comes up short.

GPL, as much as reading "some" of your posts are bothering, I don't care if you get angry by reading this...but only FIFI?! what about Honda with spending alot more than us.I believe their aero was even worse than Force India from what their drivers said during the season...sometimes ur ideas just make no point like the idea of setting the engine too far back or front!!!with what basis u tell that? I believe that's one of the easiest ways for them...
About Sam, he's taking the role during the most difficult phase of the team history, he had only a half season of working relaxed with good budget and it was 04, he turned a 5th placed car to a winner by the end of season.

GPL..... i have been saying similar things now for about three/four years and all i have got is flaming and suggestions that i troll. this once great team simply has, for whatever reason, lost the ability to build and race a consistent winning car that is suitable to race at all venues.
major changes to the modus operandi are required to achieve that end and it is obvious that the existing framework does not allow for this to occur. i am certain that the current team set out with the greatest of motivation and a desire to win, that is not in question. what is, is the reluctance to make those changes needed to refresh the operation and provide a new outlook.
it needs a huge amount of determination and focus to do this and quite simply i do not believe that it will happen. how many years in the wilderness are they prepared to cop before biting the bullet and start to bring in fresh blood. i somehow think that the team is most likely suffering from 'analysis paralysis' a condition that exists in many businesses and is not always understood. williams do not need doctors, they need specialists. yes, next year will be different but on past experience it may be simply a case of 'deja vu'.

No Kenji!

You were accused of being a flaming troll because you would not let a discussion go by without repeating the same Off-Topic criticism over and over again. Despite what is often said, I do accept criticism that is aimed at Williams. What I do not accept, and will not accept, is each and every thread being hijacked and becoming a platform for the same criticism. Keep the criticism balanced and On-Topic and there will be no cause for complaint. winking smiley

Williams and proud of it.
