Difficult opening Spanish practice for Williams
Nioo in twelfth
By Andrew Hooper
April 25 2008
It would be a difficult opening Spanish practice for the AT&T Williams team. Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima would finish in twelfth and fifteenth after the ninety minute session. At one time Kazuki would complain that his traction was quite poor. They would finish over two seconds behind the pace setters, a massive margin by anyone standards. Can they improve in the second session?

I can see Nico getting his pen out ready to be signed up by a top team.
It would seem the car is still crap with no rubber on the track not good.
No points for us this weekend, maybe 1 if we have a perfect race.

I don,t think we are going to make Q3 this weekend, the car is just not good enough.
I don,t know what the problem is at williams but they have not rooted it out yet.
See what they come up with next year.
Good luck anyway.

I also think the HONDA,s will get in front of us this weekend aswell ORB at least one of them.
When i see what a big differance Ross brawn has made at hONDA it starts me off wondering again if Sam is infact not up to the task of T.D.
There is a big problem somwhere at GROVE, it is not like them to be down IN THE DUMPS so long.

I will wait till Fp2 to make any comments, but things doesn't look too good, but we need to calm down, we're at the same pace as Toyota, so maybe there's a little hope

I know chill out , but you can see how it is going to turn out, we saw it a lot last season.
They should of been right on the pace this morning, just fine tuning.not complaining about this and that, as if it was a new track they had come to with the new car.

No! it's not the truth if you see through the posts here!...whatever this weekend resault is, there's no need to bash the whole team, grove management and stuff or Sam!...Ross and Honda doing good?!...really?! 3 races, no points when they have 2 or 3 times more budget than us, started their car design a way earlier than us and having 2 experienced drivers, and MAYBE they can match us this weekend!...dunno' what are your standards for this comparsion!

Team Willy do not need the likes of us telling them that there is a distance between us and the front of the grid. They will have long and short term plans to try and turn the situation it around. We have two choices: either we see all of the problems and say how bad we are or we see that there is work to be done and give the team our backing as they work to get us back to the front of the grid.

@gpl, it does not help either does it? We are not four races into the season yet and the car is being written off as another dud! The team will not need us to say that the car is not quick enough in its present configuration.

A much better second session for us. A lot of teams were unhappy with track conditions at the last Barca test.
There had been a 1000k GT race on the weekend before the test that put a lot of foreign rubber on the track. It meant that comparison testing was not possible with data from other Barca tests, so a lot of new bits and pieces will be run this weekend having been only reliability tested.
Williams and proud of it.

I'm really starting to tire of it, gpl, wicked_raiden, you seem like the 15 year old girls who scratch their wrists at school to get attention and to have someone to tell you that you're beautiful and that everything will be perfect. Grow up a bit and have a realistic look at the situation. The car is not a dud, its gotten a podium, we're fighting for fourth, our season target, where Toyota seem our only competitor with about 13493 times our annual budget.
Everyone else seems to be sick of your whining, so instead of pouring your negative@#$%&everywhere go and pour yourself a drink of something potent and sit in the corner and cry yourself to sleep. Or you know, get over it.

You are right Bea,
I took conclusions by my own, without knowing what the team did in the first practice. But u know im very disappointed from the last two races. Call me whatever u want - u r right.
But this is how i feel, i cannot change it - i will try. After watching the Second Free Practice i understand that we HAVE the pace, and our car is fast.
The team needs our support - and now our championship starts.
Lets hope for the best qually to williams, and a great and pointFUL day on sunday.
And again IM SORRY.

I have been right about williams cars performance for a long time now , and as it stands now the FW30 is not a good car it is average.
I say what i see.no more no less.
If you read my past observations of the williams cars pace and handling over the last 2 or 3 seasons on this forum, you will see how accurate i have been.

I think a part of this is down to Media thing.
From the first wheel turned in winter tests, team set the target to be the REAL 4th team this season, it means one place higher than last year and it means a step forward.
They're there now, 4th atm, one podium, no reliability problem during quali or race unlike most or all of our rivals and still with a good attention to next year.
I'm wondering about your posts cause you were around here in 06 too, so you can remember where we were about 15-16 months ago and the performance indicates we're going in the right direction.

Yes!...within one and half year, we turned the table from the worst team at reliability to the best so far this season...fighting for points now are our regular target at every race not waiting 10-11 races for it...we have one of the best talents on the grid in our car and managed to secure him for years and alot other...even Ferrari had to wait so many years and alot of changes in regulations to be back on their winning style.
If your problem is only a championship winning car then look at the fact that Mclaren hasn't won it for nearly the same years like us when they have Mercedes behind them and we're running independent.

This season has barely started but has already been a rollercoaster
After the highs of Australia and the low's of Malaysia and the pretty average performance in Bahrain. I can understand everyone’s hopes for a excellent performance in Spain.
We've got at least one excellent driver and one with potential to be a good driver (we hope!)... the car looks pretty good and is very reliable. As Mehryar has pointed out compare where we are now to the same time in '06... we have a lot to be optimistic about!
Maybe this post should have been in pgj's official optimism thread!!

I guess what confuses me the most is looking at the car now compared to Australia. The car seemed more stable and quicker through long corners than it does now. It seems a little unstable now.
I guess it is just me, but thats what I see.
The car may be faster overall, but certainly a little less stable, and therefore less consistent. That is part of the reason, at least in my opinion, why we did so well in Australia, consistent quick laps. Even quicker than BMW for a good portion of the race.

To be honest I wasn't dissapointed with the first practice, I first assumed the team must have been trying something out, sand-bagging or practicing long-runs. If there's anyone who has REALLY been struggling out there today it's Toyota. If this affects them in qualifying and race this is Williams' best opportunity yet to put some more breathing space between themselves and Toyota. The car's probably going to go even faster yet when the balance issues Nico was talking about have been tweaked. I think Kazuki might start to pull his weight as well as he sounded really happy after today. Let's hope for both Williams getting into Q3.

sometimes i cannot believe what i read here!!! this was friday practice which means zipetty doo dah in the long run.the only thing of relevance to the race is quali when you will then get to guage just how good the car/driver combos are performing and even then it is no template for the race....only an indicator as to what might be the fishing line up.

P1 and P2 are 'free' practice sessions, they are there for teams to experiment and try things out as we did yesterday. We have shown glimpses of form in P1 and P2 at a couple of races this year. In general, we have been weak in P3 which is the practice session that counts - with the race car.
I do not agree that we keep producing slow cars. I do not consider that the FW28 or the FW29 were slow or 'dud' cars. The FW28 had an engine problem and the FW29 was difficult to set up, it was difficult to get the balance right between hot laps for qualifying and race performance. Towards the end of last season, we closed the gap to the front runners slightly.
Setting up an F1 car is not like setting up a kart, it is a much more complex process. It is also far too easy to write off a car as being dud and then go through the rest of the season saying "I told you so" every time something goes wrong. It is far too early to write the FW30 off. Williams is not in F1 to produce bad cars or tootle around in midfield. I have every confidence that we are still making progress towards the front of the grid and that the team is doing everything that it can to improve the FW30.
As an enthusiastic amateur, I am right behind the professionals when I say "Go Team Willy" because I know that they will be working day and night to develop a winning car. Every step, whether it is a giant stride or a small stumble is a move in the right direction.
GO TEAM WILLY!
Williams and proud of it.
