AT&T Williams Team Reactions - Qualifying
By Williams F1 Team

| Reactions: Malaysian GP Qualifying |
| The AT&T Williams team endured a tough qualifying session today that will see the team start tomorrow’s Malaysian Grand Prix from P16 and P22. However, with the freedom to choose fuel loads for both cars, the team has a degree of opportunity to plan a strategy to make the best of difficult circumstances. In addition, the climatic conditions experienced in Australia and so far this weekend will put reliability into sharp focus as all cars have been working under high thermal loads for two races. With variable weather conditions in Sepang, the potential for a wet race remains real. |
Nico Rosberg: "Can’t
believe how it went today. I came here from a podium finish a few days
ago and now I qualify 16th, although I felt my last flying lap was
pretty good. Our car doesn’t seem to like the new asphalt they laid on
this track at all. It’s just too smooth and it doesn’t make our tyres
work properly, so I am just sliding everywhere. It will be tough
tomorrow starting from this position, but our car should be better in
racing conditions. And maybe some rain might help us!"
|
Kazuki Nakajima: "It
was a difficult qualifying and because it was tight on lap times, when I
made one mistake, it stopped me progressing into Q2. I have a grid
penalty for tomorrow in any case, so I want to have a consistent race
and make sure I finish. As far as performance is concerned, we will look
at a strategy plan to see what we can do, but it will be a tough race."
|
Sam Michael
Technical Director WilliamsF1 "It
was obviously a disappointing qualifying today. This morning we had a
bad run on Nico’s car in practice with a hydraulic leak which cost us
some set-up time, but even so it would be difficult to see how we could
have made it into the top ten and our qualifying performance needs
improvement. We’ll now look to strategy and put together the best race
plan we can to get the cars into the points."* Kazuki will take a ten place grid penalty due to an infringement during the last Grand Prix and will provisionally start in P22 |

The sign of a top team is to deal with any eventuality, solve it quickly and not slip backwards. You don't see McLaren or Ferrari falling off the radar because the track is too smooth.....
Come on Williams you're more experienced and professional than that.

That McLaren will have tyre problems if the race is dry. I am with you both on the performance factor. We clearly got caught out by something today and it is disappointing to get rolled over by not getting the best out of the car rather than the car having an inherent design fault. I am sure that the car is good enough for a row 4 or better race start. Until mid-season '07 we struggled to get the best performance out of the 29. I hope that today is not a trend.
At sometime in the next 24 hours they are going to have a lot of rain in Sepang which will wash the track and throw grip problems at most teams. Although in our case, it seemed that we had better grip when there was less rubber on the track.
Williams and proud of it.

it is very important to stay cool and avoid from some silly mistakes during the race, previous race showed that many things can happen during the race, and i have a good feel that williams will do a good job during the race.

I was thinking they're going to say: hey we went for wet setups and then no rain was out there but...huf! It was the most terrible Qualifying session since 2006 :/

well race like tomorrow is like an endurance race..it is very difficult if we stay focused we still can get some nice points i hope rosberg will have a terrific start like we did last week. i think the team went for a wet setup...although rosebrg was in course to do 8th position then he messed up the last sector

I don,t think the team have a wet setup on the the car,
I do know that the medium run pace was good yesterday, quite fast and consistant, so if we can have a good start and a clean start a fair amount of fuel and then we may pick up a point or 2.
Big but they must resolve this rear suspension to use the tyres a bit more the 30 is a bit to easy on them.
Still don,t know if the FW30 is a good qualifyer yet.
That is about as positive as i can get today.
RELIABILITY PROBLEMS AGAIN THIS WEEKEND, NOT GOOD.
Williams still have a lot to do to provide Nico with a race winning car.
Hero,s to zero,s today.

who knows! last year our poor reliability took our points away at Sepang...maybe this year we can rely on other team poor reliability to gain a point or 2.
Anyway, I think it's one of the worst situations to start from back of the grid strategy wise...in normal conditions, the one who can't make it through Q3 has an advantage and that fuel on board he takes for the race...but with possibility of changing weathers during the race or a complete wet race, it makes no sense to start with a wait-and-see strategy cause a dry start and a rainy conditions 10-15laps later can ruin our race easily, or other changes like that , that may happen tomorrow...I think all we can hope for is to see if our car reliable enough to reach the finishing line and hope for some changing weathers.

It will take luck to score points tomorow but it can be done - remember last weeks performance by Bourdais. Besides, if rain happens it means we won't have to do a stint on inferior tyres but focus entirely on harder compound and of course wet tyres.

See what tomorrow brings.
But i would like to rely on the pace of our car for a change instead of waiting for the misfortune of others to gift us some points.
There was a lot of bravardo coming from the team leading up to this 2nd race i wonder were they are hiding now.
Poor showing by williams cars again today.and a long time to wait till the next race.

As you say.
I think SM was thinking a top 6 or 7 in qualifying tho.
not 16th and 22nd.

The midfield really is that close. In Melb Kimi and Webber were out of qually, making it easier on Rosberg. This circumstance coupled with a good time saw Rosberg well into the top ten.
On the other hand, with all runners in, and an average couple of laps in q2 and voila, Rosberg is in 16th! The competition is that close. It's great. You'll be back up no doubt.

another problem ahead of tomorrow will be overtaking for us...looking at Speed Traps in Quali. , none of 4 toyota powered cars were reasonable...to be honest we were only better than Hondas and RBRs and with some good kms gap with front runners.
