AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg would finish in an excellent sixth in the 2007 Italian Grand Prix. Team-mate Alex Wurz's fortunes would not be as good coming home in a distant thirteenth. With the extra points that Nico score the Williams team is fifth in the constructors championship. Nico was involved in a long battle with Jenson Button with the Williams driver coming home in front.

Italian Grand Prix Race

With Nico
Rosberg and Alex Wurz starting the 2007 Italian Grand Prix from eighth and
thirteenth on the grid the race would get underway with Alonso starting from
pole and team-mate Hamilton next to hi. The start would
see Alonso leading from Hamilton and Massa. Nico was down in eighth after
lap one while Alex was now in twelfth.
The second lap would see Coullthard
crash at the Curva Grande, seeing the Safety car been deployed. It appeared
to be a failure with his front wing that caused the accident. It would take
until lap seven
before the Safety Car would return to the pit lane. Alonso was till leading
from Hamilton with threatening to pass his team-mate.
Lap eight would see Button pass Nico for eighth while Alex remained in
twelfth. Massa would pit on lap ten in what was an unscheduled stop. But he
would return to the track only to slow and return to his garage to retire.
Alonso was still leading from Hamilton and now Raikkonen. Fourth and fifth
were the BMW's of Heidfeld and Kubica. Nico and Button would continue their
fight over seventh. At one point Nico would cut a chicane in an attempt to
pass the Honda but would have to back off and let Button take the position
back. Trulli would pass Alex on lap sixteen and on lap eighteen Hamilton
would pit from second. He would return in sixth. Nico was still in eighth
some 41 seconds behind the leader.
Lap twenty and Alonso would also pit, taking on hard tyres. Kimi was now
leading and on lap twenty one Nico would pass Button for seventh coming out
of the first chicane. Several other drivers would pit including Heidfeld and
Kubica. But it would take to lap twenty five before Raikkonen would pit.
Nico would pit on lap thirty one swapping to the softer tyres. Alex would
pit from seventh on lap thirty eight seeing Nico and Alex now in seventh and
thirteenth. At the front Alonso was till leading from Hamilton and on lap
forty Hamilton would make his second stop taking on soft tyres. Alonso was
leading from Raikkonen and Hamilton now in third. But on lap forty three
going into Turn one Hamilton would pass Raikkonen for second. The following
lap and Alonso would pit. Kubica would move ahead of Nico and into fifth on
lap forty six.
As the final laps counted down Alonso was cruising and Raikkonen in third
had backed off so little was to change in these laps and it would be Alonso
who would take the chequered flag to win the 2007 Italian Grand Prix. Nico
came home in and excellent sixth but for Alex it was another race that would
see a disappointing result, finishing in just thirteenth. The tope eight
positions went to Alonso followed by Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Kubica,
Nico, Kovalainen, and Button.
Another points
scoring result for the AT&T Williams team should be encouraging for the team
as they get ready for the next race in Belgium. |
