Friday practice for the 2007 Bahrain Grand Prix would see no Friday test driver in use due to the clash of a GP2 race, Kazuki Nakajima preferring to focus on this race. This would see both Alex Wurz and Nico Rosberg taking part on Friday. The team had confirmed that the reason for Nico's retirement in Malaysia was due to a water leak caused by a faulty dry-break coupling. It would not be until ten minutes into the session before the first of the Williams cars took to the track, that of Alex Wurz. Nico had yet to leave the pit lane. The Williams team did not take part in the pre-season Bahrain test so it would be expected that they would take a little time to workout their setup.
Nico would come out for his first laps after half and hour. At this time Raikkonen was fastest from Hamilton. But it would take forty minutes before Alex would set the first timed lap. This would only see him in twelfth. Alex was able to improve his time slightly to be in eleventh, 1m:35.943. Nico was down in twelfth, 1m:36.038. Alex would spin his car at Turn seven with twenty minutes of the session remaining. Alex was running on the medium tyres while most of the other runners were on the harder tyres. Nico was now down in thirteenth as Button had moved into twelfth.
At the front it was the two Ferrari's with Raikkonen leading Massa. Alonso and Hamilton were in third and fourth followed by Trulli, Schumacher, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Kubica, and Kovalainen. Alex was still in eleventh. Raikkonen's time of 1m:33.162 was some 1.4 seconds faster than Alonso's time.
With just over fifteen minutes remaining both Alex and Nico were still on the track. Alex would pit followed by Nico. The session had seen several drivers have off-track moments including Alonso, Hamilton, Speed, Liuzzi, and Fisichella. With Barrichello moving into eleventh Alex was now in twelfth and Nico fourteenth. As the session wound down several drivers would return to the track on medium tyres. Button and Kovalainen would improve to now be in seventh and eighth. Alex and Nico were down in thirteenth and fourteenth. With the five minutes left in the session most of the front runners were back out. Both Alex and Nico were still in their garages. Hamilton was now in third, 1m:34.110. Trulli was in fifth followed by the BMW's of Heidfeld and Kubica.
With just a handful of minutes left both Alex and Nico would come out for their final runs. Sato would split the Williams pair but both Alex and Nico were on personal best times. Nico would improve to be in twelfth, 1m:35.799. Alex was in fifteenth. Alex had ran wide in on his quick lap seeing him fail to improve. With the end of the session Nico's last lap would see him jump up to ninth, 1m:35.375. Alex's last lap was a 1m:35.398 to see him in tenth. Nico and Alex would complete nineteen and twenty laps whilst in the speed figures the FW29 was showing a good turn of speed. |
