| As the BMW WilliamsF1 team
worked through their normal Friday and Saturday practices trying to find
that elusive chassis setup that would give them the best performance on the
Hungaroring circuit it was evident that the task would not be that simple. For BMW WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher his weekend, even in qualifying, were spent chasing this setup. Even as the clock ticked down during qualifying Ralf was still making changes to his car to find that little extra in performance.
Given that his practice sessions had not given the team any real feeling that the FW24 was going to be competitive it was surprising to see both WilliamsF1 cars finish third and fourth on the grid. Even more of a surprise was the fact that Ralf's times were quite close to those of Ferrari. Ralf added: "It looked worse this morning, yeah, and as I said before in the press conference we changed the car a lot which made it possible to do third today."
"We tried various things. I have
never had a qualifying session where we have tried so many things to be
honest, but for most of us it seemed to be difficult in the later part of
the session to improve the lap times, so it was for me. I had an off and we
changed in the wrong direction and in the last run it was okay but still not
good enough to improve my time." Whether Ralf can show the same performance come the race is very much an unknown, but based on their performances in the last Grand Prix in Germany we should expect Ralf to be close to the Ferrari's during the course of the race. |

For
Ralf this was a difficult process. Ralf commented on this by saying: "We've had a very, very difficult weekend so far, a
lot of ups and downs, and since we couldn't find a way round we tried
something very dramatic on our car, totally the opposite to what we were
working on, and it has worked out. I must say the team did a brilliant job
in achieving this."
