Double DNF end for WilliamsF1 2006 season
FW28 Cosworth
By Andrew Hooper
October 23 2006
It would be a case of a double DNF end for the WilliamsF1 teams 2007 season. On the opening lap Nico Rosberg would hit the rear of Mark Webber's car seeing both drivers retire as a result. Mark would retire in his garage while Nico would crash his car heavily coming onto the start-finish straight.

After qualifying
in eleventh and thirteen Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg would prepare for the
start of the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix. For Mark Webber it would be his last
race for the WilliamsF1 team prior to his move to Red Bull in 2007. The race
would also mark the end of an era with it been the last race for the engine
supplier Cosworth, who will find itself in the position of not been an
engine supplier in Formula One in 2007.
With
the start of the race the WilliamsF1 drivers were running close together
with Mark leading Nico going down the main straight. But it would all go
terribly wrong for the team when Nico was to run into the rear of Mark's
car. Nico would take to the run off area minus his front wing while Mark was
able to continue minus his rear wing.
Mark was able to
get his car back to the WilliamsF1 pit where it was decided that the damage
was too severe to allow any repairs and Mark would retire. For Nico he would
retire too but his exit from the race was to be more spectacular when he was
to crash heavily into the tyre barrier coming onto the start-finish
straight. The damage to Nico's car was extensive with wheels flying off and
the track been covered with broken parts of the car. Nico was able to get
out of the car but was seen sitting next to the guard rail where he was
checked by marshals.
As
a result of the crash the Safety Car was deployed. This was the worst
possible result for the team with not only both drivers retiring but one car
extensively damaged. Both drivers would later claim that fault lay with the
other. Where-ever the fault lies it brought to an end a season that the
WilliamsF1 team would rather quickly forget and move on from.
The race would
be won by Massa with Alonso finishing second to secure his second drivers
title. With team-mate Fisichella finishing in sixth Renault would win the
Constructors tile from Ferrari. As for the retiring Michael Schumacher he
would finish in fourth after a race that would see him drop down the order
after suffering a puncture but would then put in a fighting drive to finish
fourth. This was not enough to see him secure another drivers title but at
least it was a fitting way for the champion to end his career on such a
determined drive. |
