WilliamsF1's Alex Wurz would finish fourth fastest in the opening Friday practice for the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix. Neither Mark Webber or Nico Rosberg took part in the session preferring to sit it out and put less miles on their Cosowrth engines.

Turkish GP Friday 1st Practice

With it been hot and sunny the first practice session for the Turkish Grand Prix was underway. Giorgio Mondini was out first followed by Vettel, Wurz, Jani, Doornbos and Montagny. Anthony Davidson was also out on the track and he and Alex would look at setting an early time. Yamamoto would also take to the track. All the other drivers had pitted except for Alex Davidson and Yamamoto.

WurzKimi Raikkonen would complete an early installation lap as Alex set the first timed lap with a 1m:33.1. Davidson moved ahead of Alex with a 1m:32.2, a second ahead of Wurz at this early stage. Raikkonen and Yamamoto would both pitted. Alex was now fastest from Davidson as Pedro de la Rosa came out for his installation lap. Mondini would also come back out. Davidson would improve his time by half a second. Vettel was back out in his BMW Sauber. Montagny, Robert Doornbos and Neel Jani join the other testers on track. Davidson would pit, been 1.2 seconds faster than Alex. Alex would also pit. Doornbos was now third fastest ahead of Vettel, Montagny, Mondini and Jani.

Doornbos would run off track at turn eight but was able to continue. He would pit after making a few errors. Vettel was now fourth fastest, 1m:31.246. Heidfeld would head out for his installation lap, joined but both Davidson and Alex. Alex would move into second. Davidson would improve to now be 1.1 seconds ahead of the WilliamsF1 driver, 1m:29.193, even though Alex had improved his time with a 1m:30.385. Jani and Mondini were both out on the track as Davidson pitted. The order as Davidson from Alex, Jani, Vettel, Doornbos, Montagny, and Mondini.

With just under half the session remaining Ralf Schumacher would come out. He would be joined by Monteiro. Alex would pit. Jani would have a moment at Turn eight running wide. Monteiro would pit after his installation lap. Ralf would pit briefly only to come back out. Mondini was now in sixth, 1m:31.389. Vettel was now in third, 1m:30.707. Ralf would pit again as Trulli came out for his first lap. Vettel was now in second pushing Alex down to third, 1m:29.964, after setting
quickest final sector. Only seven drivers had set a time. Trulli would pit.

FW28Alex would return to the track with just over twenty minutes remaining. Like Ralf Trulli would only make a brief stop before coming back out. But after one lap in which he would leave the track he would pit. Alex was on a quick lap, fastest in the opening sector, as Davidson also returned to the track. Albers was also out on the track. Alex would finish his lap and move to the top of the times with a 1m:28.959. He set the fastest final sector time. The first of the Renault's, Fisichella, would leave the pit lane. Vettel would pit with sixteen minutes remaining. After his installation lap Fisichella would pit. Alex would also pit. Alonso would make his first appearance of the day, only to pit after his installation lap.

Both Monteiro and Albers were out on the track and Monteiro would move into eighth with a 1m:32.571. Alex was still fastest from Davidson and Vettel. The session would end for Davidson when he was to stop his car at Turn seven with what appeared to be an engine failure. This would bring out the yellow flags. With eight minutes remaining Alex would come back out joined by Sato, Massa, Barrichello, and Button. We had yet to see either Mark Webber or Nico Rosberg come out. Both Heidfeld and Ralf were also out on the track. De la Rosa would also leave his pit joined by Kubica and Liuzzi. With five minutes left we still only had ten drivers who had set a time.

Doornbos would move into fourth while Massa's first lap would see him in twelfth. Button would move into sixth but on his next lap he would move ahead of Davidson and into second. Michael Schumacher had taken to the track and his first lap would see him in fourth. Both Button and Michael would move ahead of Alex with Michael going fastest and Button second. Alex was now in third as de la Rosa moved into fifth ahead of team-mate Raikkonen who was now in sixth.

Kimi's next lap would see him go fastest followed by Michael, Button, Alex, Davidson, de la Rosa, Heidfeld, Vettel, Doornbos, and Jani making up the top ten. At the end of the session neither Mark or Nico had completed a lap preferring to sit out the session saving their engines.
