UNFINISHED BUSINESS: BATH V MONTPELLIER
Ferreira: much to do
By Devonport Lad
October 12 2026
“Bath Rugby a des comptes à régler en Europe.” After the disappointment of last year’s semi final defeat at the hands of eventual winners UBB, with all its attendant controversy, there is a definite sense of having a score to settle or at least having unfinished business in the Champions Cup. The road to closing out that unfinished business begins at the Rec on Saturday evening with the visit of Montpellier Hérault who convincingly defeated Ulster in the final in Bilbao to win the Challenge Cup last season.
It's difficult to know what to make of Bath's start to the season. A competent enough away win against a struggling Harlequins team in the first round, albeit with some worrying signs of defensive lapses, was followed by a nail biter at the Rec where it looked for 20 minutes or so after half time as if the result from the playoff game from last season was going to happen all over again. Fortunately, dogged resilience got the result in the end. And then there was whatever that was at Franklins Gardens last Saturday.
Continuing with the French theme, I think adapting the words of General Pierre Bosquet after the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava is apposite: "C'est magnifique mais ce n'est pas le rugby; c'est de la folie". The Bath boys, especially the "young guns" were magnificent at times in the first 45 or so minutes and certainly played some rugby, but there's no denying that there was a touch of "folie" about the game, especially in terms of defence and control in the latter stages. I'm not one of those who yearns nostalgically for the days of a 6-3 "slog in a bog" match. Tries are fun to watch, but neither am I convinced that chucking the defence baby out with the bathwater is good for the game in the long term, attractive though it might be for the TV companies. Chaos rugby is a useful tactic but maybe not so much of a go-to strategy as we go into the Champions Cup. I think JvG's old mantra about being "hard to beat" as a core element of our ethos has to be dusted off.
So what of our opponents this Saturday? Bath and Montpellier have played each other 5 times in European competitions since 2011, with Bath just edging the win tally by 3-2 although the last meeting of the teams at the Rec in 2021 ended in a 10-19 win for Montpellier. They've had a mixed bag of results so far this season, notching up wins against Vannes, Perpignan and Toulon but losing to Pau, Toulouse (no disgrace in that) and last weekend Stade Francais. They're currently in 7th place in the Top14 on the same number of points as Stade Francais, who face the Bulls in the other Pool 4 competition on Saturday. The game between Stade and Montpellier was a useful showcase of what we can expect when we play both of them. Not much between them at half time, but the Stade Francais team gradually gained ascendancy over the Montpellier side which included Messrs Hogg and Vunipola and sealed the win with a bonus point try by Barre in the 77th minute. However, and we need to note this carefully, Montpellier didn't go away, scoring their third try on the 80th minute to make the final score 30-22. As David Flatman would say, we need to be "on it" for 80 minutes on Saturday. We certainly can't afford the vulnerable 10 minutes immediately after half time that showed again against Exeter.
Team selection for this one is a bit of a conundrum. We're at home and it's the Champions Cup which we know JvG values highly so you would expect us to name the strongest team available, given that we know some key players are still out with injury. The problem is that on the basis of who looks to be in good nick in the first few games of the season, it's not as easy as it used to be to know quite who the best player is in every position across the squad. Already some of the "young guns" are demonstrating that they are more than ready to challenge for selection against top opposition and some of our best players over recent seasons aren’t looking like the nailed-on selections that they used to be. Some tough calls may need to be made.
Part of me says why not use the core of the rotated squad who did so well against Northampton for 45 or so minutes. That said and going back to my earlier comments about being hard to beat and exercising control, we probably need a few more "been there and done it" heads in the mix. And if they're fit, surely we need to find places in the squad for the likes of Henry Arundell, Bernard van der Linde and Tom de Glanville.
The Rec will be rocking again on Saturday evening as it always is on European nights. Don't get me wrong; I'm delighted with the attacking improvements that Mike Prendergast is bringing to the team but by the same token I hope J P Fereira runs some fairly brutal defence sessions this week!
I think we can and will get it right on Saturday and start to close the book on our unfinished European business!

JP certainly has a lot of work to do but not too 'brutal" I hope- the boys will need
the brutality for the match.
I also think JvG will look to our breakdown coach Andy Robinson to review and revise our work there, after being very much second best in the rucks against Northampton.
PG
As for selection I think injury updates will dictate a fair bit. Think there's a good chance we see Spencer this week unless he's ruled out in the media briefing. To follow on from my post on the Saints thread I would like to see Richards and Roux together in the row, Green at 8 and potentially Hennessy (fitness permitting) and Griffin involved but I won't get my hopes up on any of those points.

Include some line breaking ball carriers that can give good front foot ball and it will make life much easier at ruck time (and harder for the opposition) whoever is picked.

I have reflected since the weekend farce and I feel the following.....
I believe that JVG has got 4 - 5 players "lined up" for 2027 - 2028, ie after the World Cup.
I would give the players who won the PREM Cup two years ago their head and play them a lot.
With the infusion in one years time we will have a very, very strong squad with the youngsters with a load of experience and all the better for it....
I would go with an all international selection for this game, with younger players coming on to give energy.
Bayliss, Du Preez and Pepper. Great balance and big players.
Hennessy is comfirmed fit, but would not rush back against a french side. But great to have him in the mix.
Spencer is also back, but again samething. Finally getting some backs back.
Definitely not a prediction but think my team would be (with assumptions made on fitness for some)
Obano, Kepu, Stuart, Roux, Richards, Hill, Pepper, Green, Spencer, Russell, Griffin, Ojomoh, Hennessy, Cokanasiga, Carreras
Dunn, Kirk, Griffin, Ewels, Bayliss, BvdL, Arundell, Coetzee
In reality I’m sure we’ll see a more conventional JvG ‘first choice’ selection

Arundell
Hennessey
Ojomoh
Griffin
Russell
Spencer
Beno
Dunn

I don't ever recall Joe C benching. Is he a player who needs a bit of time to get on the pace of the game so doesn't really work as a sub? Or is it that he's a bit less versatile? Or am I misremembering it all?

I would have thought that this is the issue.

Should be a good opportunity for Ted to get a start. Hopefully he'll really hit his straps and make himself the regular starter that we all think he should be.

I think the 6-2 just means we very rarely have a wing on the bench at all

Good performances from last week have been rewarded. I like that team.
Not sure if any unknown injuries contributed to this selection but brilliant to see trust placed in Jeanes, Green and Griffin to go and deliver. Can understand if Coetzee is being eased back but makes me wonder if DDP is fit (or Enoch for that matter)
Given what we've heard about team sheets being planned out in advance I very much doubt this was how the opening Euro game was drawn up a month ago so really promising to see selection adapting to players putting their hand up for places
Three Scots in their backs - Ali Price and Stuart Hogg the others.
Billy V on the bench.

Adam Hastings at 10 for Montpellier.

Hopefully the Rec crowd can give Hogg the reception he deserves
What an experience for Griffin and Jeanes, if they can hold their own in this kind of game then it'll cement some serious depth at wing and lock.
I just want Will Stuart not to drop the ball this week.
He is normally very coordinated but since his return he seems to have dropped a critical ball each match

Players feed off crowd hostility, bets thing we can do is ignore him.
Interesting selection by JvG, does make me wonder if Jaco and DDP aren't fit. Concerning also that Arundell is still missing.
Montpellier have picked a very strong team, have an excellent defence although are prone to yellow cards. Bath are at home, have to be favourites and to be honest if we can't win this one then we're going nowhere in the competition.
Green is showing enough signs of being our No 8 for the seasons ahead, and Griffin seems to have learned a lot from Will Muir! He will be important tomorrow is regathering Spencer’s box kicks!
Expect a somewhat similar opponent to Exeter in as much as they're probably coming with a pretty direct threat that I would like to think we have enough about us to contain (maybe a welcome change in tactic after last week) and come away with the win
That said, Spencer back makes such a huge difference. Just seeing his name on the team sheet brings me confidence. Great to see Jeanes, Green and Griffin rewarded with another start, hope they go well again. Having Spenny on the pitch marshalling will only help them.
Bench looks very flexible with plenty of permutations on how we could end up looking with 50-60mins on the clock.

Some big ol' wingers on parade tomorrow between Cokanasiga, Griffin and Delibes. Expecting a strategy to try and target the other side aerially as Taofifenua is a fair bit smaller
I hope we don't box kick to JoCo's wing to compete too often, it's not playing to his strengths and usually results in a knock on. We should be kick passing to his wing instead which does. OL needs a big game, especially in defence. I'm not feeling v positive about it all tbh, we seem to be less than the sum of our parts this season. COYB 💙🖤🤍

I doubt JVG intended to telegraph 'back row injury crisis' with this selection, but that's how it's making me feel!
In a way giving big credit to JVG, as even though I am an active advocate for the young guys.
I would happily see Du Preez, Arundell, Roux (who had a great game against Exeter), even Maloney, who hasnt set the world alight, but brings tones of experience, starting.
Big nod to Jeanes and Green. A few of guys have mentioned Jeanes already. So thats pretty awesome hes starting.
Griffin on the way, he was very solid against the champs. Shame though Arundell isnt back yet.
But it will be very close because of our young team. But this is also how you develpment the next stage of our squad!! Excited!

I think he just wants to crowbar kepu in maybe.
Even if roux, ddp and jaco all injured he still presumably had option of malony in the 23 with Richard's covering backrow. Or bringing in enoch, timmins or treacey, or are they not registered for europe?
Fascinated to know if roux/ jaco/ ddp/ arundell available - if so i think its double good news as they arent injured yet jvg has chosen to reward jeanes, green , griffin for really good showings last week. Something a few of us have been calling for in terms of reward.
Ollie must be running out of chances to be run into sole form - been aboiut 14 months now. Needs to take his chance with hennessey back and waiting in the wings.
Feel like with spencer back and griffin chasing high balls we may be in for a more bath-like performance

I like that team, and great for those players from last week to be rewarded. You’d imagine it’s a kick up the bum to some senior players as well - you’ve dipped slightly and a younger player has taken your place. Are you going to allow that?
Competition breeds success, and if anyone knows how to motivate this group it’s JvG. Get off to a winning start tonight (not counting any chickens) and we will be well set for a deep run, especially with Bordeaux drawing last night.
With no Underhill/Reed.
Assume Hennessey been given another week to improve his fitness.

I think this is a selection due to injuries rather than reward. I don't see rewarding players when shipping 70 points progressive. Another week ,another centre pairing. I would love to see some consistency there. Great to have Spencer back, we have really missed him.
Take your point about shipping 70 and the centre combo's but bit harsh maybe around selection.
We were winning at 53 mins when wholesale changes were made.we would all have been delighted at that point with that bench at our disposal.
Jeanes came off at that point having given a really good, hardworking performance.
Green and griffin has excellent games despite getting gragged into the debacle of the last 25 mins.
Agree about spencer, really key to our game and no matter how much game time we give the other options he is just on another level currently.
Only started watching after the tries were scored so not got a great feel for the game, but Montpellier unsurprisingly clearly on top in the scrum.
Instead desperate line defence
Biggest area of concern is how slow the back row has been in getting to the breakdown – could be a deliberate tactic from us not to commit too many to the ruck, but there were a few occasions where they basically recycled unchallenged.
Not sure if Piardi's not reffing the scrum very well or if our front row is genuinely struggling.
Green never seems to play badly. We're not missing Alfie with him stepping up like this.

This is emergency ripcord time. The gameplan is just not working. There are two or three players in the team who are just not playing their worth and should be moved on. And everyone knows who they are.
Think there are a number of others who need to improve rapidly too - JC and Dunny for starters (unless they are already on your move on list!)
’’Paint the whole world with a rainbow”
The whole management should be looking at themselves, bar Prendagast as we didnt look to bad when we spread the ball wide.
Forwards - wow, what is going on, line out, basic errors, with the names and depth, we have to be doing much much better.
General play - always going through the forwards way to much, so predictable. Just get the ball wide!! - That is on JVG honestly for that, looks way too much like Munster playing.
Joe C - drops balls ALWAYS in big matches. Muir injured for the last two years. We need new wingers, thank god Griffin looks steady. Where is Arundell!
I will keep saying this now - Lee Blackett - perhaps the mastermind behind our success two years ago.
People will criticize me, JVG did stabilize us yes, but he did not take us to the next level, it was Lee Blackett.

It was worse than I had feared, it's all been said above and there'll be more tomorrow for sure. That was just not good enough on so many levels tonight. Never too high just lower it seems 😕
A figure that would have embarrassed us when I was playing very amateur rugby
27 missed tackles
15 penalties conceded

Thought Montpelier’s basics were excellent and that was all they needed to beat us. Their flankers were both superb and completely outclassed Pepper (ineffectual) and Hill (stinker).
Green stand out again and that shirt has to be his. Griffin great on the kick chase and aerially. Beno was whacking people. Jeanes’ extra athleticism round the park seems to help. Questions for the coaching and leadership now though to turn this around somehow
There are games that leave you disappointed, frustrated, confused but I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

Hill and Pepper both had a stinker today (particularly Hill) and are I'm sure both paid notably more than Reid and Bayliss (but both have a lot of credit in the bank).
The confidence just seems gone from the team, ever since Bordeaux. Some elements of this today were when it felt like every bounce of the ball, every breakdown, every 50/50 went the wrong way, but we made our own lives so hard. We're a gainline team, but we're really just not big enough to keep playing that way.
We probably won't make the Champions Cup knockouts now. If we stick with the current approach I suspect we'll make 3rd or 4th in the league, but I think next season would be more slow decline. If we make some major decisions we might finish 6th, but we might also free up salary cap to make some signings after the world cup. If we lose Beno (heavily rumoured), Lawrence, ideally Joe, a backrow, probs Dunn retiring that's a good chunk of change. There are a couple more who should be looking over their shoulders. DDP does not seem like a great signing unless we got him cheap as chips. JC23 I guess is probably out of contract and his injury record does not make good reading. Is Ewels really the lineout lock we need going forward? We've probably got 2, max 3 more good years from Spencer and Finn, how do we create the chance for them to win?
In terms of coaching, well JvG brought Blackett in so he gets credit for that on top of everything else he's done. Blackett will probably be free after the World Cup too. I know JvG and JPF go back ages, but defence is really not looking like its working right now.
This will all I'm sure seem a bit kneejerk. But it really is since Bordeaux we've been poor and we don't seem to have a way to rescue it.

At some point you would hope that the owners are going to sit down with JVG and ask him what he intends to do to turn things around and what he needs to do it.
If there is no significant step up next week then we are frankly in a crisis.

I pray we are not about to be hit by a sting in the tail of what we've done with salary management in the last few years (to be clear, im not talking about breaches, more the collateral of backloading and any overvalued contracts signed in the golden glow of the Treble season)
If he can get the squad to reset and stabilise (as I think he will), then we should see some improvement.
If not, and we keep seeing extremes from match to match (the Saints scoreline, outplayed at the breakdown, excessive handling errors) then I can see questions target to be posed about how he can break us out of the spiral.
I get the impression he’s an excellent man manager; he knows who to use and how to do it, so for me he still has that credit, but come Christmas and we’re still in decline, I think questions will start to be asked.

You're right that he is an excellent player manager. And of course we must back him and give him a chance to turn this around.
But we have declined since Blackett left. No titles last season despite our squad, and we do not see it again this season - based on actual performances, only our depth is getting us through
It kind of reminds me of Todd Blackadder, good man manager but not good rugby style.
I wish our owner would appoint attacked minded head coachs, rather than someone just to manage his company. Yes I will get critized for that to, but its how I feel.
Gloucester now, is unfortunately a very big game.
I did though love how Green played!!! And Jeanes again holding his own, like Griffin. We also must start Bayliss from the start, what an athlete!

Just two?
Carreras, Spencer, Russell, Dunn, Stuart, Lawerence, Ewels, know they are on the team sheet if they train. It's no coincidence that Arthur Green, Charlie Griffin and Will Jeanes are outshining them as they come from Uni rugby where if you don't perform someone takes your place. The senior players know they only have to show a few feature bits of skill to compensate for weak basics.
I've said before it's a rebuild year. It's time to lose a few games giving starts to fresh talent with a work ethic!
Montpelier were average but the Europe thing only comes after regular Prem success, frankly I'm glad we are out. It time we realised who we are as a club.

The only thing as bad as our breakdown work (was it 5 penalties having players isolated and holding on) was Piardi's reffing - he was as bad as he was when he gave 4 yellows to the aussies on 13 minutes the other week.
Ojo is not the man to bosh it up the middle...All those penalties and handling errors just destroyed any chance. And we totally failed to resource the rucks when we had possession.
Fair play to Montpellier, they took their chances and were deserved winners.
Fair play to Montpellier, they deserved to win and showed us how to play the game.
Some mitigation for Big Joe's drop – there was some serious pace on that pass from Santi, I don't think it was entirely his fault but certainly indicative of our night.
Our attack seemed to be give the ball to a single runner to head into contact and get turned over. Prendergast isn’t adding any value and is failing miserably. Defensively we are pretty weak as well.
Absolutely nothing positive to take from tonight’s game, we are seriously regressing and JvG has his work cut out to stop the slide before it’s too late.

That was a game we lost simply by not doing the basics well.
This is the crux for me. Players of this quality should not be this poor at the basics (I include tackling). Its hard enough to overcome the opposition, we shouldn't need to overcome the opposition and ourselves.
I don't care if they have to strip the training back to simple concepts, or whatever, those basics have got to be nailed.
At the moment we are not tough to beat.
It reminded me of the dark years prior to JvG.
Our set piece has become a laughing stock, discipline and turnovers killing us.
The squad appear not to have recovered from the Euro Semi-final.
Feel it's going to be a very long season and not looking forward to my visit to Castle Grim on Friday.
We are not far off but its still too far to be competitive against the top sides. I have no doubt that we will get it back but I doubt it will be soon enough to comfortably salvage our season. A realist would just bin Big Cup now and focus on not getting too far behind the top 4 to make the playoffs in the Prem. On that showing, Glaws will fancy their chances next weekend no end.
We desperately need a functioning 7 - we were just destroyed at the breakdown by Montpellier. Glaws have Jac Morgann. I recommend a game plan of not having any rucks at all.
... IMHO, of course.

Montpellier are a pretty average team, but do have a decent defence. Bath had plenty of chances to win the game, but simply didn’t have any cohesive attacking plan and just rely on individual bits of skill.
Bath haven’t looked dangerous going forward since Lee Blackett left and this season we appear worse than at any stage last season. Last night our backs seemed lost on who to pass to, the tactic if you can call it that was to kick, chase and hope. Montpellier were just waiting for our isolated runners and had an easy night defensively.
Not sure where we go from here, but challenging for trophies this season is gone and it’s really disappointing after such a good last few years.
The number of mistakes was farcical last night (the lineout throw in the second half on their line where Frosty(?) threw to absolutely no one was truly dreadful), that added to a lot of ‘rub of the green’ decisions going against us made for a depressing watch. Massive reaction needed next week, want to see big improvement in basics.
Think I’d let some academy players turn out in Europe now - not wholesale, but any 50-50 (or even 60-40) calls, the U23 player gets the nod.
But this is a perfect time for JvGs mantra of “never too high never too low”. Going deep in the Champions Cup is probably unattainable with this squad, but either rest weekends or the Challenge Cup would provide some respite from the Premiership at the business end. Yes some soul searching is required, but everything is not lost after 2 wins and 2 losses at the start of the season.
There's lots of talk of "growing the game" but I hope that doesn't mean even more hammered stag-dos, sloppy students and fisticuffs.
I might suggest at the next fan forum a dedicated p1ss-up section of the ground where the drunk morons can barge into one another, spill beer over themselves, demand to leave for a wee at the most inopportune moments, and chat loudly about anything other than rugby.
Mind you all English teams results were bad.
With an away South African game we are out of the Euro Cup.

Not all BSJ. Compare Glos performance v UBB with ours
Glos showed a far higher level of intensity, physicality and far fewer errors against a better, stronger side than Montpelier put out
Whilst I watched and was delighted with the Glos performance the reality is they drew at home.....
Theirs was the of course the best result

34 handling errors apparently
A figure that would have embarrassed us when I was playing very amateur rugby
27 missed tackles
15 penalties conceded
This, says it all for me.
Sadly out of Europe and top 4 maybe, hop I’m proved wrong , flag at half mast !

It was clearly bad watching at the ground, but I didn’t realise we were that bad. The ref was poor and made some baffling decisions, but it’s down to captain to get on the right side of the ref and Ben didn’t do that.
As we’re out of the CC reckoning I really hope we don’t try and win the little cup as that’s a massive step backwards.
We’ve now been totally humiliated at Saints, humbled at home by Montpellier so I think it might be wise to avoid the Glos game as that’s might be another 50+ defeat playing how we are this season.
We’ve had nothing but fun under JvG so this regression is really shocking.

Something is clearly off. Not seen JvG that abrupt in post-match presser before. Hopefully he can put his finger on it before Friday, but I doubt it.
We need some solid, dependable players back - really hope Roux, Reid, Muir and TdG are available for Glos as it feels like a 'back to basics' time for the team. Hennessey would be a bonus too but even with those guys, I'd be amazed if we get anything at Castle Grim.
It’s going to be a long season if we don’t improve and I suggest by the end of the season it’ll no longer be sell out crowds.

Who’s coaching your breakdown?

It has been Andy Robinson for a couple of seasons: not sure who it is now, but he certainly has much to do!

Robbo was referenced on commentary last night but it really was weird the way we just stood back away from breakdowns while Montpelier went straight in and clearly got away several times with jackaling hands going beyond the ball at first go to effect a lot of turnovers

We performed badly, it happens. This chatter and hints at JvG needing to leave is just ridiculous. We won’t have a right to win every game. Sometimes other teams are just going to nullify us. Again, it happens.
The young guys played well again, and given Saints are the only Prem team to win in the big cup this weekend (and it was a laboured win against a poor Cardiff side) shows that maybe it isn’t just us who are going to struggle in Europe.
I’m also baffled at these “it’s over, we’re out” - do we not play 3 more games?
Crikey, have just a touch of faith.

Not quite sure what went wrong in this game, but I do find some of these posts a tad over the top.

Top 3 in the group qualify. Losing a home game is very very bad towards that. Also i don't think anyone's really suggesting JvG it's a problem nor are they reacting to one game. It's the trend since Bordeaux.
As hasta says this isnt a single game , we really havent been very good since the UBB loss.
We probably have the most expensive squad in the prem , and prob the most expensive set of backroom staff. I think its reasonble to have high standards and expectations but totally agree that everyone is chasing the same goals and sometimes we will come off second best.
Agree there are lots of positives still inc the young guys performance.
Historically ~10 point was normally enough to qualify for the last 16, with occasionally a few as 6. However with a new criteria of only pool places 1-3 automatically qualifying, the remaining 4 places go to the highest points scoring teams from those ranked 4-6 across all pools. The next 4 highest scoring teams go into the Challenge Cup.
So it is very much not over after 1 round, although a home semi final looks decidedly unlikely 😉

I agree CB but how far are we away from a home grown academy team? 3 or 4 years. Some have already graduated, how much would that cost?
Kirk , Tuipolotu,,A Griffin, Emmanuel ,Sela
Jeanes , EOG, McKnight, Sprengher
C Treacey, A Green, Yeabsley, Ridgeway, Timmins, Reid, Richards
Mears, Davises, Donoghue, Linegar, D Treacey, Roue, Ojomoh Hennessey, Cutts
Offiah, C Griffin, Winters, Woods,
Bear in mind we missed out on youngsters like Blackett and S Emanuel.
I do wonder if JvG's train journey has a home grown destination with a few stelar enhancements

There are 15pts available, however we’ve no chance in SA so that’s down to 10 and with our blunt unimaginative attack we won’t score more than 3 tries than our opponents so that’s down to 8. That also assumes we can win in Cardiff and home to Stade. Personally would rather finish bottom of the group than drop into the little cup as we’ve been there done that.

Its not definitive EBB and there are others I've certainly committed in error, its just that whilst we currently have an expensive squad and that might well be the coaches policy, it doesn't have to be and we have the talent to develop a predominantly 'home grown squad' if required.
Alfie Blackett is a big lock (Scottish) who was available to our academy but currently at Cardiff Met regarded as a miss, Steff Emmanuel is an exciting centre who was ripping up trees for us before going to Cardiff Rugby. Seen by some as a Wales international.
Timmins is a brutal back row who severely blotted his copybook with a 'violent act' on a pinned down player. He had shown great promise prior to that incident.
We have a catchment area for young players the envy of many clubs, we could actually form a decent second team to beef up the Prem.

Certainly I struggle to envision our current team doing what Glos and Exeter did in round 1 and consequently, our next Prem game at Kingsholm really starts to look and feel a critical indicator of where we are heading. Either up into top 2 contention or down into mid table
But I can't think of a better person to solve those problems
The new try scoring bonus point system will decide a lot of last 16 qualifiers & seeding, so plenty to play for still.
Exeter's game yesterday is a great example. A great example of the sort of game we want to see, that bonus points are supposed to encourage, and yet this new system prioritizes a run away victory over that match.
What better occasion to put the last couple of results right than a trip to The Shed?
If we can get Quinn Roux, Miles Reid and Louis Hennessey all back in the starting XV I'll be feeling bullish.

Since JvG took over I’ve never felt like this, but I’m glad I’m not going and don’t have the opportunity to watch the game. 3 straight losses is going to be rather concerning.
JvG thinks the 4 try BP change will work in our and others favour in this years big cup competition. We shall see but playing better would be more helpful tbh...
Unlike the Gallagher PREM, where four tries are enough to get teams a try bonus point, Champions Cup organisers EPCR have adopted the three tries or more ruling.
The number of teams receiving a try bonus point in the opening halved from 12 under the old system to just six last weekend, and van Graan believes that will lead to a concertinaed effect in the pool tables, with fewer insurmountable gaps between teams.
maybe its a bit early in the morning, but this doesnt make sense? Is it that you need to score 3 tries more than the opposition?
European competitions now use the same Try Bonus Point rule as the Top 14.
Only the winning team can get a TBP and to achieve this they have to score 3 or more tries than there opponents.
Examples
Northampton (4 tries) v Cardiff (2 tries) under the old rule (and still in operation in the Prem), Saints would have got the TBP under the new EPCR rule no TBP.
Toulouse (7 tries) v Exeter (6 tries) under the old rule both would have got TBP under the new rule neither did.

Hypothetical situation, most unlikely I know:
Team A scores 3 tries, all conversations missed, equals 15 points.
Team B scores 6 penalty kicks, equals 18 points and a win.
Can a losing team receive a TBP ?
I think I preferred the old (PREM current) system. I'm quite happy for Glaw and Exeter to get a try bonus point for their efforts along with Bulls et al. I feel like they are the game we want to encourage.

According to the interweb, it seems you have to win AND score 3 more tries to get the TBP.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
“A bonus point will be awarded to a club scoring at least three tries more than their opponent and to a club losing by seven points or fewer.”
