Team Summary:
After an encouraging FP1 that saw a Williams finish in seventh the second
Friday practice session would commence with a large number of drivers coming
out including both Williams cars. The majority of drivers were on the medium
tyre as Ocon set a 1m:32.906 followed by Norris and Ricciardo. Both Bottas
and Verstappen would receive replacement gearboxes Verstappen would not make
it out early in the session while Bottas would not make it out at all. Sainz
was now quickest with a 1m:31.463 followed by Ocon and Norris. After their
first runs the Williams pair were tenth and 11th. As more times weer set
Sainz was now quickest with a 1m:30.964 followed by Leclerc, Gasly, Zhou,
Ocon and Norris sixth. The Williams pair were currently 7th and 15th.
Perez was now second ahead of Leclerc but the session would be Red Flagged
as Sainz crashed his car going backwards into the barrier. He had lost the rear
end of his car seeing it turn quickly. Despite this Sainz was currently
quickest from Perez, Leclerc, Gasly, Zhou, Hamilton, Ocon, Norris, Alex, and
Alonso tenth. With the restart Verstappen would come out for his first run.
But he would have an immediate issue involving Stroll as Verstappen would
have a steering issue. While this was happening Leclerc would go quickest
with a 1m:30.044 now followed by Hamilton and Perez. Russell was now
quickest with a 1m:29.928 using the soft tyre. Leclerc was second from
Perez, Hamilton, Alonso, Norris, Gasly, Zhou, Ocon and Magnussen tenth with
eighteen minutes remaining.
It was a bit of back to situation normal for Williams Racing with one car
16th and the other 18th with a staggering 1.2s between the pair. But
Williams would lose one car with a drive issue stopping out on the track
seeing another Red Flag. With the restart the medium tyre became the tyre of
choice as the session drew to a close as they were on longer runs. With the
session end Russell would retain his quickest time followed by Leclerc,
Perez, Hamilton, Alonso, Norris, Gasly, Zhou, Ocon and Magnussen tenth. For
Williams their cars would finish in 17th and 18th. It was reported that Alex
felt he did not get the best of the track conditions in terms of getting a
clear lap.
Alex Albon:
Alex would also start the session on the medium tyre. Alex would set a slow
1m:51.401 on his opening lap. But his first flying laps was a 1m:34.223 to
be eighth dropping to tenth. This would become 14th but with a 1m:31.947
would see him jump up to be seventh. He would pit after a seven lap run. He
would drop to ninth as he waited to see the session restart after a Red
Flag. Alex would return this time on the soft tyre currently 11th. This
would become 16th as he failed to improve position despite a 1m:31.710. he
would pit after a six lap run. In the pits this would become 17th. With
seven minutes remaining Alex would return using used medium tyres and with
the end of the session he would remain 17th.
Nicholas Latifi:
With the start of the second practice Nicholas would take to the track on
the medium tyre. Nicholas would set a 1m:36.312 to be seventh. He would
improve with a 1m:35.966 to be tenth. This would become 13th even with a
1m:34.180. He would pit after a seven lap run now 15th. He would drop to
17th as he waited in the pits with the Red Flag. With the restart Nicholas
would return on the soft tyre. Nicholas was now 18th and would pit after a
five lap run failing to improve. Nicholas would return on used medium tyres.
But Nicholas would stop complaining he had no drive. This would bring his
session to an end. |
