Italian GP: Productive session for Williams Martini in FP2

The second Friday practice session for the 2017 Italian GP would be a productive one for the Williams Martini team. Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll would finish the session in 10th and 15th positions but overall the team was far happier how the day went compared to previous races. The team would work through its programme including longer runs on the various tyres as well as testing bodywork changes including a rear wing.
Martini Italian GP Friday 2nd Practice
The second Friday session would again start with a chance of rain. As the
drivers took to the track the soft tyre would be the most popular. After the
first times it would be Hulkenberg quickest with a 1m:24.440, followed by
Palmer. Perez was now quickest with a 1m:23.633 followed by Ocon and Sainz.
Raikkonen was now quickest with a1m:22.750 also on the soft tyre. Bottas
would go quickest with a 1m:22.475 followed by Raikkonen and Vettel. After
their first runs Felipe and Lance were fifth and fourteenth. Verstappen was
now second but Raikkonen would improve to be second behind Bottas. Bottas
had also found time with a 1m:22.393.
Ocon would move ahead of Felipe but the Williams driver would take the spot
back to remain fifth. The second Williams of Lance was now tenth. Hamilton
was now quickest with a 1m:22.103 followed by Bottas and Raikkonen. Having
completed their runs the Williams drivers were in eighth and tenth with
Felipe ahead of Lance. Ricciardo was in sixth on the super soft tyre. Vettel
was fourth and Verstappen fifth. Hamilton would improve his quickest lap
with a 1m:21.956 to be 0.437 ahead of Bottas. Verstappen was able to find
time going third with a 1m:22.409 running on the super soft tyre. More
drivers were coming out on the super soft tyre. Vettel would go quickest
with a 1m:21.546 but Bottas would move ahead with a 1m:21.406. Hamilton was
not able to better his team-mate finishing in second. Vettel was third and
After their super soft tyre runs the Williams drivers weer seventh and
twelfth, with just over forty five minutes remaining. With just over thirty
minutes remaining and the Williams drivers had returned on used super soft
tyres for what was likely to be longer runs. The top ten was Bottas,
Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Vandoorne, Alonso, Ocon,
and Felipe Massa. Teams were splitting their test with one driver using the
soft tyre and the other the super soft tyre, as in the case of Williams.
With thirteen minutes remaining the Virtual Safety car was deployed as a
result of Magnussen cars stopping at Ascari with broken rear suspension. His
car would be recovered and the session would go green. The session would end
with the Williams drivers remaining in tenth and fifteenth.
Felipe would be first out for Williams running on the soft tyre. Felipe's
first time would be a 1m:24.251 to be fourth. But he would drop to eighth
then tenth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:23.504 to be fifth. Felipe would
improve with a 1m:23.403 to remain in fifth. Felipe would drop to seventh
and would pit after eight laps on the soft tyre. In his pit he would drop to
eighth. Felipe would join his team-mate also on new super soft tyres. Felipe
would drop his outside wheels as he came out on the second chicane so he
would abort his lap. His next lap would see a 1m:23.176 to be seventh.
Felipe would also pit after a six lap run dropping to eighth. Felipe would
return running on used super soft tyres, dropping to ninth. Felipe had been
able to improve his lap time with a 1m:22.985. Felipe would drop to tenth
when Alonso went eighth. Felipe would continue his longer run on the super
soft tyre. Felipe would pit switching to the soft tyre like his team-mate.
With the session coming to a close Felipe had completed over forty laps.
Lance would also take to the track running on the soft tyre. Lance would set
a 1m:24.525 to be fourteenth. Lance would also find time with a 1m:23.923 to
be tenth. He would drop to eleventh but would set a 1m:23.663 to be eighth.
But he would drop to ninth. On one of his laps Lance would have a slide
exiting the second chicane dropping his left-rear wheel onto the gravel.
Lance would also pit after a nine lap run. In the pit Lance would drop to
eleventh behind Grosjean. With just under an hour remaining Lance would
return this time on new super soft tyres. Lance would improve with a
1m:23.403 to be tenth. But Lance would spin his car at Ascari facing the
wrong way. Lance would pit after his spin having complete only four laps. In
his pit he would drop to fourteenth. Lance would also come back out also on
used super soft tyres but he would pit quickly. Lance would return running
on used soft tyre currently fifteenth. On one of his runs Lance would miss
the first chicane. Lance would continue his soft tyre long run. Lance would
pit after a nineteen lap run but would quickly return.
