Austrian GP: 11th & 15th for Williams Martini in FP1

In what was an uneventful session for the Williams Martini team they would see their drivers finish in 11th and 15th after the opening Friday practice for the 2017 Austrian GP. For Felipe Massa he would finish 11th and team-mate Lance Strool 15th. Both drivers would focus on the super soft tyre during the session and they both would have spins the one for Felipe seeing him hit the kerb and pit as a precaution. The session would see the Williams team run a series of upgrades to the FW40.

Team Summary:
With the start of the opening Friday practice session at the Red Bull circuit there would be a mixture of tyres been used from the ultra soft through to the soft. Both Williams drivers would complete their installation laps. The quickest time so far would be set by Verstappen with a 1m:08.429 running on the soft tyre. The track would go empty with fifteen minutes of the session completed. Lance would improve but Ocon would move into second. But Hamilton would move ahead as Raikkonen would spin at Turn one ruining his tyres. Bottas would go quickest with a 1m:07.591 on the ultra soft tyre.

Hamilton would set a 1m:07.469 to be quickest with Bottas second. Vettel was third but had also spun like his team-mate. Verstappen was fourth followed by Ocon, Felipe, Lance, and Alonso eighth. With fifty eight minutes remaining Felipe was seventh and Lance tenth. Vettel would go quickest with a 1m:06.826 followed by Bottas and Hamilton. He was on the super soft tyre and he would see Hamilton go quickest with a 1m:06.526 but he was on the ultra soft tyre. Both Williams drivers would continue their runs on the super soft tyre.

With fifty minutes remaining only Raikkonen was on the track not having set a time after his spin. Raikkonen would move up to ninth. He would improve with a 1m:07.321 to be fourth. He would pit leaving the track empty. With just under forty minutes remaining drivers would start to return to the track. Bottas wuld go quickest with a 1m:06.345 running on the super soft tyre. Hamilton was second but was now running on the soft tyre. Ricciardo was now fourth behind Vettel. Vandoorne was now fifth behind Vettel and ahead of Raikkonen. Hamilton had set a 1m:05.975 to be quickest but he was on the soft tyre. Again the track would empty eith fifteen minutes remaining.

Ocon and Bottas would return joined by Hamilton and Felipe. The track would again become busy with drivers continuing their runs as the session drew to a close. THe top ten was Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas, Vettel, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Vandoorne, Kvyat, Alonso and Ocon. Verstappen would set anew quickets first sector time but would spin ruining his lap. The Williams drivers would finish the session in eleventh and fifteenth.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would follow his team-mate out except he would be running on the soft tyre. Felipe would complete two installation laps. Felipe would also return to the track also on the super soft tyre. Felipe would set a 1m:09.410 to currently be fourth. He would drop to eighth but a 1m:08.952 would see him sixth. Felipe would improve with a 1m:08.222 and was now ninth but the following laps would see him set a 1m:07.848 to be seventh. Vandoorne would move ahead seeing Felipe now eighth as he pitted having completed thirteen laps.

Felipe would also return to the track also on the super soft tyre. Felipe would improve with a 1m:07.550 to be seventh dropping to eighth. But Ocon would move ahead seeing Felipe ninth becoming tenth. Felipe would pit after a ten lap run currently eleventh. With just over ten minutes remaining Felipe would return remaining on the used super soft tyre. He would go off at Turn nine but was able to continue. He would say that he wanted to pit having hit the kerb quite hard. Felipe would pit currently eleventh. He would finish his session in his pit.

Lance Stroll:
With the start of the first Friday practice Lance would take to the track running on the super soft tyre. Lance would complete just a single installation lap. Lance would return to what was an empty track coming back out on new super soft tyres. Lance would set a 1m:10.971 followed by a 1m:09.658. Lance would say that his rears were start to go and was told to do a cool down lap. Lance would drop to sixth but would improve with a 1m:09.022 to be fifth. This would become sixth becoming seventh when Felipe went quicker. Lance would spin at Turn nine carrying a bit too much speed going into the corner.

Lance would drop to tenth as others improved. Lance would complain of a lot of vibration and that he had hit a kerb. Lance would pit having completed twelve laps and was currently fourteenth. While in his pit this would become sixteenth. With thirty seven minutes remaining Lance would return to the track again running on the super soft tyre. Lance would set a 1m:08.041 to be twelfth. Like his team-mate Lance would also pit after a eleven lap run currently fifteenth. Lance would follow his team-mate back out on the used super soft tyre. Five minutes remaining and Lance continued to lap the circuit but was not looking to set any lap times quicker having stayed on the used tyres.
