Canadian GP: Stroll scores first F1 points

The 2017 Canadian GP would see Williams Martini driver Lance Stroll score his first points in Formula One with a 9th place finish in the race. This result was made even more satisfying because it was at his home race. His race would see him pit early and then move back up through the field passing several more expereinced drivers in the process. For team-mate Felipe Massa his race could not have been anymore different with Felipe suffering a DNF as a result of another car coliding with his on the first lap. A positive race for the Williams Martini team with Lance's first points but the result could have been even better.

Race Notes • Lance Stroll finished ninth to claim his first ever Formula One points in front of his home crowd at today’s Canadian Grand Prix • Felipe’s race unfortunately ended at Turn 3 on lap one, after Sainz collided with Grosjean and collected Felipe as he crashed out • Lance had a great start, moving up to 15th from 17th during the opening lap. Following an early safety car and a virtual safety car period, Lance ran as high as P9, after passing Vandoorne at the Turn 10 hairpin on lap 15 • Lance made his first and only pitstop of the race on lap 27 for a set of supersoft tyres. He rejoined the race in P17 but quickly started to gain positions on fresh tyres • Lance made some great overtaking manoeuvres to pass Wehrlein, Ericsson, Palmer, Grosjean, Vandoorne and Alonso on his way to P10; before moving up to P9 as a result of Kvyat’s retirement to claim his maiden Formula One points. • Felipe is now 10th in the Drivers’ Championship, while Lance moves up to 16th. The team retains sixth in the Constructors’ Championship with 22 points. |

Felipe Massa: "I’m so disappointed to be out after just three corners. I was a complete passenger in the collision. I think Carlos was hit by somebody, but I was the only car that he hit. It’s a shame to finish the race like that, especially when the car has been so competitive all weekend and we could have scored a good amount of points." |

Lance Stroll: "I am just happy for myself, for the team, for everyone. The balance of the car was good all race. I was in a flow. I knew we had good straight line speed in the Williams. I chose my overtakes at the right times, sometimes I could have done them a lap earlier, but it was a bit risky so I did it a lap later and stayed patient. James, my engineer, was giving me good communications throughout the whole race about what was happening around us. We just stayed cool headed and took it to the end and P9. It was about things falling into place and getting everything to work with no issues and being able to do the pace we know how to do. It means the world to me being able to finish a race in the points and be able to see those Canadian flags up in the air at my race." |

Officer: "A huge congratulations to Lance. He’s the first Canadian in Formula One since Jacques Villeneuve, and now he’s scored his first points at his home race. It’s a great story. Given the difficult start Lance has had to his Formula One career, this feels like a race win to us. It was an incredible drive. He showed some fantastic race-craft, great overtaking and he really earned those points today. From 17th on the grid up to ninth, including a battle with a double world champion, which he took in his stride. I think today’s result will boost his confidence going forward and will give him some real momentum. On the other side of the garage, Felipe had an unfortunate race. He actually had a good start, but then lost a few places as a result of the jostling that normally takes place at Turns 1 and 2 at this race. He was then collected by Carlos, through no fault of his own. With the pace of the car this weekend it’s very unfortunate. We could have scored some very good points. We’re now looking ahead to Azerbaijan. The car should be reasonably strong there so we’ll give it another go." |

Sir Frank would be gutted to see that p9 photo, make no doubt. It is a little like primary school, where everyone is a winner. Scary stuff.

I guess they are celebrating Lance's first points, but P9 does not sound that great.

P9 is a fantastic result for Lance and something he can grow from. Well worth celebrating. I was personally quite impressed with the way he achieved it starting from the back. Lots of over takes and holding Alonso back is no mean feat. Good job! Lance will never forget that race. Now let's target 8th then 7th etc etc. I have much more confidence in him having seen this performance.

I liked that detail, but something about it puts me off.
To play devils advocate, Isn't it slightly patronising to congratulate a driver for doing well whilst you lap them? To do it then emphasises a pecking order, shows the world how dominant Lewis is to have the time to think about other's races, and it's also a veiled form of self-praise. It Stroll is doing well, check me out!
I sincerely hope Lewis isn't getting to that Senna-esque "statesman" stage of his career where he shows "respect" mentoring young drivers (which also happens to boost his ego) and then feels a sense of self-entitlement on track, where his demonstrations of "respect" to young drivers translates to assuming being given preferential treatment whilst racing from all young drivers in return.

It's a load of bull. Lewis had no idea Lance was doing well. He gave him a wave to say "thanks for letting me through and by the way I am surprised to see you still running." The other sentiment is what he thought of later, or was told to say by his PR.

Some do protest too much. It's a good thing Lewis offered a "Thumbs Up" because an "Open Hand" gesture could have been interpreted in different ways.

I would personally prefer a middle finger from someone who laps me than a thumbs up, because a middle finger suggests they are insecure enough to feel the need to rub their own success in your face, whereas the latter feels like genuinely smug supremacy. There is a ghost of a middle finger in any case.
But I do feel awful now. He meant well I'm sure and he does have a much faster car. It's not so hard to work out who is doing well when you are driving within yourself, in a lonely race working your way up and lapping the field. That's believable. He's sat through press conferences having to listen to endless questions that make Lance squirm beside him, so I'm taking it on face value. It just feels a bit unintentionally patronising.

Realistically, If Mas/Gro/Sai had not crashed out, that would have been P12 so the result is irrelevant.
However, what I will say was that he raced well. He was able to fight and overtake which was good to see, and I'm glad we took "some" points home while we hand yet another fistful to our competitors.
If this gives lance a bit of a boost and gets the media off his back, then I'll be happier. He needs to take another step performance wise before we can start praising his results, Felipe would have been fighting Ric for the podium spot. Not Alonso for P10.

True, but his performance was so strong in the race, that had he not had such a poor qualifying session (where the teams' decision not to give him fresh tyres could have been a factor, as you say )then he may have achieved a better result, rather than being bottled up behind the desperately slow Magnussen for 25 laps, so as you say, the result is irrelevant. With the 6th fastest lap and a stellar final stint in clear air, he drove well, he quietened the media, and he got some points.

He just needs to be put on a sensible tyre strategy for qualifying, and hope flags don't come out on his final run. The rest is down to experience. For a first effort competing in low downforce trim, he ended the weekend at a good level. Hopefully it will take him less time next time round.

It looks likely Mercedes will choose between Bottas and Alonso, with the one not selected not being able to command a high price elsewhere.
Massa not wanted on the voyage - he lost 3 places by turn 3 on Sunday, by which time Max was up to second.

Well.. if young Stroll qualified with new rubber, he could have started.. possibly on the edge of Top10.
There is one golden proverb in racing.. if you want to finish first, first you have to finish...
Now that can be extended... if you want to win or finish in the points, first you have to finish.
So all the ifs and buts go out the window.

That's not an easy question. Who is available, who will come, who will be allowed to drive along side Lance, who will Martini allow! Etc etc. Pound to a penny it's Massa again.
In the ideal world I would have Max or Ricci! Can't see either coming unless RB pull the plug and they are desperate. Perez could be a great choice if he starts drinking Martini!
