Uncertain skies and strategies

After reasonably sunny weather in the Eifel mountains over the past couple of days, race day has dawned with overcast skies and there was even a light drizzle in the early morning. However, the circuit area is well known for having its own micro-climate and it is barely worth looking at any weather forecasts for the day as they are invariably wrong.

Equally difficult to predict for the afternoon will be the best solution for a winning race strategy. Two stops is considered the best way to go, although we saw at this event last year that refuelling just once can bring some advantages. However, given that there are only two real overtaking points on the track, the heavier one-stop cars will suffer in the early stages of the race. The modifications to the first section of the track also add another new element to the team’s tactical decisions.

Before the weekend, the additional tight corners after the start were considered as the scene of a potential first lap accident. However, watching the Formula 3000 race on Saturday afternoon would seem to suggest that the prophets of doom might be wrong. Thanks to the fact the run-off areas at this point are tarmac rather than gravel, while several F3000 cars went off line, they managed to rejoin the race and continue.

For the moment, with one and a half hours to go until the final thirty minute warm-up session, it seems as though the last chance to run the cars in race trim will take place in the dry.
