Juan Pablo Montoya was quickest in qualifying for the third successive time this season. The Colombian was the only one of the top four to do a perfect lap, stringing together all his best sector times on the same lap on his third run. It was good enough to take pole in 1’29”906.

Without the slight errors in the final turns, Michael Schumacher would almost certainly have taken pole. The Ferrari driver would have done a 1’29”844 if he had managed to repeat his final sector time from his second run on his third one. Michael would have beaten brother Ralf by 44 thousandths. For his perfect lap, Ralf would have stayed second on 1’29”888.

Rubens Barrichello also failed to string all his best sector times together on one lap. Rubens’ ideal time would have been 1’30”20, which would actually have seen him secure the same grid position he will start from tomorrow afternoon.
