Ferrari to uphold Italian honour

There is a mood of disappointment in the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro garage at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as the Italian team lost 2 to 1 to Croatia in a World Cup game this morning.

However, this is just a side issue for what is a professional racing team and, if anything, everyone is even more determined to uphold national honours in this afternoon’s qualifying session. In fact the weather forecast for the day could see more favourable conditions for the Scuderia’s chassis-tyre combination.
Although temperatures are expected to reach a high of 25°C, cloud cover could see a lower track temperature than yesterday. So far this season, that set of circumstances has appeared to favour the Bridgestone runners.
Tyre choice for qualifying and the race will still be on the agenda during this morning’s final 90 minutes of free practice, as well as identifying the best settings on the car for qualifying trim. With no overnight rain, track times should come down quickly today as more rubber builds up on the racing line.
With rumours circulating in the media that TV viewing figures for F1 are in decline this year, a fact aggravated by competing with the world cup, it is clear that here in Canada at least that is not the case. Around 100,000 spectators attended yesterday’s session and it is almost impossible to walk through the streets of Montreal.
While Rubens Barrichello heads for his first technical briefing of the morning, he has not forgotten the World Cup either. At the very moment that Brazil is playing China, the Ferrari man walked into the paddock proudly wearing the Brazilian soccer team shirt.
