This morning’s warm-up session produced a surprise in the shape of Heinz-Harald Frentzen topping the time sheet. The Arrows driver, who qualified in 13th place yesterday afternoon posted a time of 1’20”875. However, it can be assumed that the German was running a lighter fuel load than most of his colleagues, especially as Arrows has something of a tradition of adopting unusual race strategies.

Michael Schumacher was second, the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro man lapping in 1’20”972. Third was the McLaren-Mercedes of David Coulthard (1’21”547,) fourth is Jarno Trulli in the Renault (1’21”952) and in fifth place is the McLaren-Mercedes of Kimi Raikkonen (1’22”052.) Rubens Barichello completes the top six in 1’22”076. While Frentzen is the surprise at the front, Montoya is the surprise further down. The pole man is only in 20th place in the Williams.

The two Ferrari drivers both have a spare car here in Monaco and these were given their first run of the weekend, during this final thirty minute session. Michael did 9 laps in his race car and 8 in the T car, while Rubens split his laps 10 to 6, race to T car. Neither men made changes to their set-up, happy with their race configuration on the F2002.

With one refuelling stop, the only real strategy choice, the decision then comes down to whether to make it early or late. The former means starting on a lighter fuel load, which could allow for more agility in the early stages, but with the difficulty of overtaking, the earlier stop could then cause problems. With accidents a higher possibility than on some other more conventional circuits, there is always a chance that the Safety Car will arrive to make strategic decisions even more complicated.
