Despite last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix which saw Schumacher take a controversial win from his team-mate Rubens Barrichello, the German took the award ahead of Tiger Woods (who has received the trophy for the past two years), Lance Armstrong (the winner of the 2001 Tour de France event) and Ian Thorpe (Australia's much respected Olympic swimming champion).
It has been a busy day for awards for Schumacher; earlier in the day, he was presented with the '2002 International Sportsman of the Year' by the Variety Club of London before jetting off to Monte Carlo to collect this award.
Juan Pablo Montoya, meanwhile, was given the '2002 Newcomer of the Year' award for his outstanding debut season last year, which, despite only netting a single victory at the Italian Grand Prix, saw the Colombian achieve a number of decent results and give his competitors a good run for their money.
