It was something of a late arrival for Michael Schumacher at Indianapolis as he made the most of his chance to take a break in the USA. Schumacher arrived at Indy yesterday afternoon and after a quick hello to the team he was back to work.

Michael Schumacher has enjoyed his short break in the US, taking the chance to enjoy some horse riding with his wife Corinna and friends. But on arriving at Indy he has only a quick chance to say hello to the team then it was back to work. First up was a meeting with Rubens Barrichello and three Maseratis a Spyder, a Trofeo and the 8CTF, the single seater with which Wilbur Shaw twice won the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.

“I went horse riding with Corinna and some friends,” he said. “It was very hot and very relaxing. I am happy to be in Indy for the Grand Prix. It’s true that I don’t find the Formula 1 track here particularly demanding, but that doesn’t mean I’m not pleased to be here.”

In recent races Ferrari had been working to secure Barrichello second place in the drivers title but not that position is relatively secure then Michael has hinted that more fun will be introduced to the teams racing. Maybe they will be given a free strategy to race for themselves and not the team?

“Our main aim is to help Rubens to finish second in the championship,” replied Michael. “Of course, after the result in Monza things have changed a bit, given that Rubens now has a comfortable lead over his rivals. I think therefore that in the race we will have some fun.”

Michael was won ten races this season and set a new record for number of points scored, so does the German driver consider this season to be the stuff of dreams?

“It is hard to find the words to describe my feelings. There have some really special moments, like at Magny-Cours and Spa. I can say that this year has seen us in an almost perfect situation. Do I sometimes wonder if it will all still be true when I wake up in the morning? Yes, sometimes I think I need to pinch myself as was the case on Monday morning in Magny-Cours when I think I had probably drunk a little bit too much!”
