Ferrari’s 2003 engine will be an evolution of the 2002 unit but with some nice innovations according to Paolo Martinelli. Speaking during the FIA press conference Paolo was asked to speak a little about the team’s plans for 2003. With this year being so successful for Ferrari it would be foolish for the team to take a new approach at this stage, but this does not rule out some nice innovations to remain on top.
Ferrari are on course with the 2003 engine and initial tests will be starting this month along with much more extensive tests on the dyno then eventually on the track in the new chassis.
“Well, I think next year's engine will be an evolution of the current one as usual,” said Martinelli. “Normally, we start the first tests in September and normally use October and November to make developments and our target is to work on reliability with long runs simulation etc on the dyno and later on the track between December this year and January 2003.”
V-angles seem to be the main topic when it comes to engines these days. With rumours suggesting that Renault are having to change V-angle after finding it to be of no real benefit. And Martinelli does not expect any change in the Ferrari V instead they are looking to evolve the engine without such drastic changes. “Probably not but I think we have some interesting evolutions while maintaining the same V-angle.” Commented Paolo.
As usual for Ferrari they are aiming for a late January/Early February launch of the 2003 chassis.
