With a lot of fuel onboard the F2002 Rubens Barrichello is quite confident that his fourth place will be bettered in Saturday’s qualifying session. While Barrichello has been impressed with the performance so far of the Michelin tyres he is not feeling too uncomfortable at this moment. Barrichello will be going all out for the win and he knows he not only faces a challenge from Williams and McLaren but also his world champion team mate Michael Schumacher.
“We ran with a lot of fuel on board, while the McLarens usually have a smaller amount in their cars on Fridays,” said Barrichello. “However, I was impressed by the performance of the Michelins. But all the same we can do well tomorrow in qualifying. As for the race, we will have to see what the situation is. As usual, I will concentrate on giving my all and will do all I can to win. But Michael will be doing the same and if I am third or fourth it will be difficult.”
Many wish to see the Ferrari drivers race wheel to wheel and dice for positions and the drivers would love that chance as well, but the teams goals are more important at this stage of the season and always are. Ferrari have no desire to lose points thanks to their drivers taking each other out and this still remains the same according to Rubens.
“Sure, a duel between me and Michael would be great, but for me it is more important to listen to the team, who underline the fact they do not want to ever see two Ferraris fighting one another aggressively. It would be an unnecessary risk,” explained Rubens. “We are a team and we don’t race against one another, only with one another to get the best possible result for the team.”
With Michael Schumacher gunning for his record breaking tenth win of the season Rubens knows his work is going to be hard if he is to win here, but would he rather win here or at Monza in the next round of the championship?
“Obviously winning at Monza would be really great, because Monza has a particular appeal, just as it would be nice to win in Brazil in front of my fans,” said Barrichello. “But I am concentrating on winning and not giving any thought to where it happens.”
