Eddie Irvine has thankfully dismissed recent rumours that he was to take up a testing role with the Ferrari team next season. Irvine who drove for Ferrari in his peak was rumoured to be coming back to the Scuderia, but thankfully this does not appear to be the case. Irvine hinting that he is far too long in the tooth to be able to handle the heavy Ferrari test schedule.
“That's not going to happen,” said Irvine. “Mugello's hard work, the idea of driving around Mugello for two or three days and then... you'd actually need a week of recovery after doing three days hard testing for Ferrari at Mugello. No, that's a joke that made a headline.”
But Eddie wasted no time in opening that mouth of his and slated Ferrari for their dominance in the Hungarian Grand Prix. A touch of envy perhaps from the Ulsterman who led Ferrari backwards when he had his big chance in 1999. Irvine reckons Ferrari are taking the mickey out of the sport. Surprisingly though he never complained when the 99 season saw him receive the team orders.
"Ferrari not letting the two guys race is just not right," said Irvine. "They should let them race. Who cares who comes second in the championship? This is overkill - just like it was in Austria. It's fact that Ferrari have produced the best car this year, but what they are doing is completely over the top. They are just taking the mickey out of the sport."
