It is surprising that Alonso says the team is playing safe, as it means that their running in the final three minutes of the qualifying reflects to the fact that may be the team is unsure of the Pirelli tyres, and wanted to conserve it.

In fact Stefano Domenicali, after supporting the new tyre makers all the winter season, suddenly complained of the degradation a day earlier.

With testing done in pure racing tracks during the winter, while Albert Park being a street circuit, the tyres are showing a difference in performance, which seems to have taken the Italian outfit by surprise.

The only saving grace for tomorrow's race looks now to the car's bullet proof reliability which it showed during the winter testing, and the team would surely keep their fingers crossed for the same.
