Ferrari unhappy with turbocharged engine plans for 2013

Ferrari are seemingly unhappy with Formula One's plan to go for 4-cylinder, 1.6 litre turbocharged engine formula from 2013.

The details about the radical changes in engine regulations were reported earlier this week in the online magazine GPWeek, which covered:-

- 1.6 litre, 4 cylinder turbo engines that would produce 650bhp.

- cars to feature 80's style ‘ground effect’ aerodynamics.

- Use of just five of these 650 hp engines per season

- the turbo engines to run at about 10,000rpm

- feature an efficient limit on the fuel flow

- use of KERS

- sidepods of the cars to be moved forwards to increase driver protection

- size of the wheel rims to be increased.

The details of the same are likely to be discussed at the WMSC meeting this Friday.

However, Ferrari are reportedly against the idea and wants F1 to revert to 1.8 litre V6 engine design, which, they say, would be much easier to adapt from the current 2.4 litre V8s.

Luca Marmorini, Ferrari's engineering head, insists there is not enough time to design a completely new engine for 2013 “with the necessary reliability to have only four units (per driver), as they would like."

He said, that a 4-cylinder design would require a complete overhaul of the chassis designs.
