Midland have obtained the mandatory licence needed to enter Formula One from a national motor sport authority. Midland will therefore race in 2006 with a Russian nationality.

The mandatory licence has been obtained from the RAF otherwise known as the Russian Automobile Federation. This makes Midland F1's first ever Russian racing team.

Based at Silverstone in the UK, the teams’ Russian born Canadian owner Alex Schnaider said that "the connection reflects this project's core targets and values." he hoped that the decision would "push ... the development of Russia's motor sport' and 'open new horizons for Russian racing drivers".
