Alonso nominated to Laureus Award

Fernando Alonso has been nominated to the prestigious Laureus Award Newcomer of the Year. 400 journalists from 73 countries have made up the shortlist out of which 41 sports personalities like John McEnroe, Miguel Indurain or Ed Moses will choose the winner.

Alonso competes on his category with Brtish Open winner Ben Curtis, NBA player LeBron James, football star Robinho, tennis player Robinho and golfer Michelle Wie.

Last year the Necommer Award was won by NBA star Yao Ming.

On the category of World Sportsman of the year Michael Schumacher will compete with Roger Federer, Michael Phelps, Johny Wilkinson, Valentino Rossi and Lance Armostrong.

Alonso scored 2 poles, one fastest laps and 4 podiums in the 2003 season including a win at Hungary and is the youngest driver to have set a pole, a fastest lap and a win in the history of the sport.
