Renault F1 driver, Fernando Alonso, was released form the Hospital and he declared to the Spanish sport newspaper “Marca” that he had a good chance to win the race if it would not have been for his crashing:
“I was easily catching up the leaders and even if I had to go through pits I was going to do it in the lap of the accident, because the security car was on the track; I would have exited the pits 4th and with new tires, I would have won.”
Many people are arguing that Alonso should have slowed down when he saw the yellow flags:
“I did not have time to react. Two turns before they called me on the radio to tell me to get into pits to refuel and they asked me if I wanted dry or wet tires. I asked for wets and it was then when I found the bits of the other car in the middle of the track”
The following moments were quite a rush:
“All my body was aching, and when I got out of the car the only thing I wanted was to sit down, right away the doctors came and they told me “don’t move, don’t move”, I was trying to calm them down telling them I was fine, but they wouldn’t listen, they did not even take off my helmet”.
He was then rushed into the medical center:
“The best came in the hospital, four doctors started to take off my clothes and to cut my overalls and the shirt, I told them to calm down, but they would not listen. I thought I had a hole in my stomach, because they looked really worried and I almost laughed when I saw all the machines they were getting ready” Alonso said. “They placed something in my wrist that hurt even more than the accident and afterwards the oxygen, too much.”
Alonso is quite positive after two podiums in 3 races for the next race at Imola:
From Malaysia I came out with fever, from here a bit worse, but anyhow, it’s a bit of bruises in my left leg and a few cuts in my elbows because of the pedals, that’s it!”.
“My morale is quite high and I am going to give it all during the rest of the year, because I feel strong and the car is racing quite well” He said.
