Young Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi reportedly met with Peter Sauber Thursday night in Belgium to discuss the possibility of driving for SAUBER PETRONAS next season. Today he proved his readiness by clinching the F3000 championship in a rain soaked race at one of the most challenging tracks around.
The championship will no doubt make him an even more attractive prospect to the Formula One teams. There is a chance he could go to Jaguar with Red Bull backing but he has been more closely linked with Ferrari and Sauber. Ferrari are said to keen on signing him to a long-term contract to eventually replace either Michael Schumacher or Rubens Barrichello when one of them decides to hang up his helmet. In the meantime, it would benefit them to have Liuzzi race with SAUBER for a few seasons to gain some valuable experience with Formula One cars.
