More podiums for Guy Martin at Kells

Guy Martin claimed a hat-trick of second places at the Kells Road Races last weekend, pushing Ryan Farquhar all the way and proving that it’s only a matter of time before he takes his maiden National win in Ireland.

With qualifying untimed, grid positions were determined by championship standings - so Guy had to start his first race from the second wave of riders, which meant race positions weren’t necessarily determined by track position, due to the time differentials. It didn’t hold him back though, and he opened his account with second in the Open race aboard the Robinson Concrete 1000cc Suzuki, just failing to get the better of Farquhar on corrected time.

Having sat out the first race (for non-tuned engines), a similar result was attained in the second 600cc race aboard the 600cc Tullyally/Craig Honda, after having led in the early stages. In the final race of the day, the Grand Final, the duo battled it out all the way, taking turns to lead, and Guy appeared to be heading for victory until his rival pulled off a final lap, final corner overtaking manoeuvre to deny the Uel Duncan Racing rider the win.

Speaking after three hard fought, close races Guy said: “The races were all really close and I’m pleased to have taken three second places. I was in contention in each and every one of them, so it would have been nice to take a win but I wasn’t too far away and gave it my all. I thought I’d cracked it in the Grand Final but Ryan just left his brakes that little bit later and pipped me to the line. We’re getting ever closer, though, and I’m on a good run at the moment so, hopefully, we’ll get onto that top step of the podium sooner rather than later.”

Guy now has a two-week break before his next outing at the Mid Antrim 150 road races, which take place on Saturday, the 6th of August.
