Belgium Day 1: Hamilton Fastest
By Sam Cooper
July 11 2007
Following a disappointing home grand prix, completing the first day of testing at the Spa Francorchamps in the lead will be a moral boost, not only for Lewis but for his team as well, as the upgrades that the Woking team brought out for this weeks test have obviously worked, as the Ferrari of Felipe Massa- Ferrari being the quicker car in Britain- was 0.8 seconds behind the championship leader.
The days testing was dry and sunny with just a handful of minor incidents stopping the days practicing. Nelson Piquet jr stopped on track early into the day, as his R27 stopped out on track mid afternoon. Red Bull driver David Coulthard stopped out on track in the afternoon causing the second red flag of the day.
Only Vitantonio Liuzzi crashed on the opening days testing at the famous Belgium circuit, which caused pieces of his STR02 to fly onto the circuit, grinding the days testing to a temporally halt, while the shards of carbon fibre bodywork were removed from the track.
Ralf Schumacher was in action on the first day for Toyota, the German finished 1.2 seconds away from Lewis. Testing will continue tomorrow.
