| German GP Friday 2nd Practice | |
| With the completion of the
second Friday practice for the German Grand Prix both BMW WilliamsF1
drivers were in the top ten, but it was very much a day where all the
drivers struggled to find the limits of the new sections of the circuit.
Ralf would finish fifth and Juan Pablo seventh. Both drivers would have moments during the session with Ralf spinning off at the second turn and then Juan Pablo having a high speed off at the tricky Agip Kurve. Juan Pablo would also have problems with his helmet requiring him to return to the pits. Even though fifth and seventh looks fairly respective both Ralf and Juan Pablo are a considerable margin behind the Ferrari's. Juan Pablo commented on the session by saying: "There's still some job to do on the balance of my car. We spent the session learning the track and adjusting it to the new course but still I am not very comfortable here. During the sessions we concentrated also on tyre evaluation, which we need to be very careful about. At the end of the session I was doing a long run but I had a problem with the visor of my helmet which wasn't sealing perfectly and I had to abort the run and come back into the pits to have the helmet replaced." The second session would
see the Ferrari drivers swap positions with
Michael Schumacher setting the fastest time with a lap of 1m:16.086,
this was just over
a tenth of a second faster than Barrichello's morning time. Rubens did not
improve so dropped to second. For Sauber's
Felipe Massa he would spend a lot of his time spinning off the track, losing his front wing on his final run, but
he finished in eighth. Team-mate Nick Heidfeld was thirteenth. For Toyota
Allan McNish set the ninth fastest nine places ahead
of team-mate Mika Salo, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen was tenth
in the Arrows just one hundredth of a second ahead of Enrique
Bernoldi. For Jordan Takuma Sato headed Giancarlo Fisichella with fourteenth fastest time and Fisichella down in sixteenth fastest after suffering an engine failure. For Renault they are really struggling to set competitive times with Button and Trulli down in nineteenth and twentieth positions. The final two positions were occupied by Webber and Yoong in their Minardi's. Yoong would beach his car on the kerb and have to be pushed off by the marshalls. |
