In what was a race that both BMW
WilliamsF1 drivers would like to forget we would see both Mark Webber and
Nick Heidfeld retire from the 2005 Turkish Grand Prix. Both drivers would
suffer from multiple tyre failures and Mark would make contact with Michael
Schumacher's Ferrari damaging his car. Nick was would be involved in contact
with Massa at the start of the race which would see him make the first of
his pit stops to have his tyre replaced.
As
for the race Kimi Raikkonen would lead the field around on the parade lap
for the fifty eight lap race for the Turkish Grand Prix. At the start
Fisichella would take the lead from Kimi going into turn one. Kimi would
retake the lead going into Turn 12. But there would be contact at Turn one
which would see Massa and Heidfeld coming together which would see Massa
take to the pits for repairs. Massa's Sauber would hit the rear of the FW27
sending it up into the air losing its front wing. Montoya was challenging
Alonso for third. Both Klein and Coulthard had made excellent starts with
Klein in seventh with David eighth.
Lap two and Kimi would set a fastest lap of the race, 1m:28.881. Alonso
would pass Fisichella for second. Mark Webber would pass Coulthard to now be
in eighth. The next lap and it would be Alonso who was fastest, a 1m:27.563.
But the following lap Kimi would beat this with a 1m:27.289. Button was in
tenth. For Nick Heidfeld his race would go wrong when he was forced to pit
with a punctured right rear tyre. He would have it replaced and return back
into the race. Mark was closing in onto Klein. At the front Raikkonen was
nearly a second ahead of Alonso. Fisichella was another 2.2 seconds back
while Montoya was an equal gap behind the Renault. On lap seven Mark would
pass Klein going into Turn 12.
BY
lap nine Kimi's lead was out to 1.4 seconds over Alonso. But for the BMW
WilliamsF1 team they would see their second driver suffer a right rear tyre
failure the same as Nick which would see Mark limp back to the pits. He
would have it replaced but was now a lap down on the leaders. Nick was down
in fourteenth. Nick would set another fastest lap on lap nine, a 1m:26.330.
Button was now in sixth after having passed Klein. Lap thirteen and KImi
continued to set fastest laps, a 1m:26.013. Alonso would be the first to pit
seeing him come back out in fifth ahead of Button.
Nick would make his first fuel
stop. Lap fourteen and Fisichella would pit while at Turn nine Mark and
Michael Schumacher would have a coming together which would see both drivers
forced to pit with damage to their cars. lap sixteen and Button was
attacking Alonso for fourth. Michael would return to the pits to retire his
car from the race.
BY
lap seventeen Kimi's lead over second placed Montoya was out to 10.5
seconds. Trulli would pit from third. Montoya would set a fastest lap of the
race, a 1m:25.420, on lap nineteen. Button was able to pass Alonso going
into Turn 12 to take third place, and he would quickly pull away. Mark was
down in nineteenth while Nick was in fourteenth. A disaster of a race for
the BMW WilliamsF1 team. Kimi would set another fastest lap of the race, a
1m:25.073, on lap twenty one. Montoya would pit from second, joined by
Button. Lap twenty three and Mark would have further problems with his right
rear that would see him spin off into the gravel. He would make his way back
to the pits this time to retire.
Kimi would pit on lap twenty three and would rejoin still in the lead.
Montoya was still in second but had Alonso just 1.5 seconds behind him. Juan
Pablo had difficulties in his pit stop with the refuelling rig. Klein would
pit from fourth while Villeneuve pitted from eleventh on lap twenty four.
The next lap and the second Red Bull of Coulthard would come in from fourth.
He was joined by Barrichello. Nick was now a lap down and still in
fourteenth. At the front we had the two McLaren's followed by the Renault's
of Alonso and Fisichella. Trulli and Button were in fifth and sixth. Sato
and Coulthard made up the top eight.
Lap
twenty six and KImi's lead was out to 12.4 seconds over Montoya. Over the
next couple of laps Juan Pablo was able to bring this down to 11.5 seconds
on lap twenty nine. Alonso was 2.0 seconds behind Montoya. Fisichella was
21.2 seconds behind his team-mate. Lap thirty would see Sato pit and return
in tenth. Nick would suffer another tyre failure seeing him run wide at Turn
8. This was two tyre failures for both WilliamsF1 cars. On lap thirty two
Nick would retire. Kimi's lead was now 11.8 seconds on lap thirty three.
Despite been listed as retired the Ferrari team would repair Michael's car
and send him back out some eighteen laps down.
Lap thirty five and Alonso would pit from third, coming back out in fourth.
Kimi's lead was now down to 9.6 seconds over Montoya. The next lap and KImi
had it back out to 10.6 seconds. Fisichella would also pit returning in
sixth behind Button. Alonso was in third and Trulli fourth. By lap forty
Juan Pablo was able to close the gap to Kimi with only 8.2 seconds
separating them. Button was now right behind Trulli challenging for fourth.
Lap forty two and Montoya would pit from second, while Ralf Schumacher would
make his second stop from twelfth. The Red Bull's of Coulthard and Klein
were in seventh and eighth.
Juan
Pablo was still in second but he was now 34.7 seconds behind Kimi on lap
forty three. The following lap and Trulli would pit. Lap forty six and KImi
would pit from the lead, joined by Klein. With a quick stop Kimi would come
back out in the lead. Montoya in second place was providing the Finn with
excellent support taking points away from Alonso. Coulthard would pit the
next lap. Button had yet to make his second stop. Kimi's lead was now down
to 20.1 seconds. On lap forty eight Button would pit coming back out in
fifth.
So on lap fifty the order was Raikkonen, Montoya, Alonso, Fisichella,
Button, Trulli, Coulthard, and Klein. As for Michael Schumacher his return
to the race would at least allow him to start after Heidfeld, Massa, and
Webber at the next race in Italy. But now that he had reached this point the
Ferrari team would bring him back into his pit to retire for the second
time. Lap fifty four and KImi was easily keeping his car in the lead from
Montoya. But Alonso was 6.7 seconds behind Juan Pablo. Button was just 1.1
seconds behind Fisichella.
But for Montoya it would go wrong when he was to be hit from the rear by a
Jordan that would see him spin but he was able to recover but now Alonso was
just 0.8 seconds behind the McLaren. But Juan Pablo would run wide at Turn 8
and this would see Alonso pass him and take second. This would see kImi only
reduce Alonso's lead by two points. Juan Pablo was in third
with just one lap remaining. Kimi would cross the line to take an easy
victory but the McLaren team would be annoyed to see Juan Pablo not finish
in second. Second was Alonso from Montoya, Fisichella, Button, Trulli, and
the Red Bull's of Coulthard and Klein. |
