With Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber finishing in sixth and seventh it would be a points scoring finish for the BMW WilliamsF1 team in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Both drivers would use a two stop strategy during the course of the race.

Hungarian Grand Prix Review

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the Hungarian Grand Prix would see the team come away with fifth points, with Nick and mark finishing in sixth and seventh. Both drivers would follow a two stop strategy during the course of the race.

HeidfeldWith the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers, Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber, starting from twelfth and sixteenth the gird would move off on their parade lap for the start of the seventy lap 2005 Hungarian Grand Prix. With Michael Schumacher on pole and Montoya alongside the grid would form up. Championship rivals Raikkonen and Alonso would start from fourth and sixth positions respectively. The start of this race is crucial as it is such a difficult track on which to overtake.

The start of the race would see Michael leading from Montoya with Kimi in third. For Red Bull's Christian Klein his race would end with a crash at the first corner. Klein would flip his car after making contact with another car. Alonso would suffer damage to his front wing. Both Alonso and Barrichello would pit at the end of the first lap. At the front Michael was leading from Kimi with Montoya now in third. Trulli was in fourth.

Nick was now in eighth and Mark twelfth. Lap two and Kimi would set a fastest lap, a 1m:22.827. Ralf was in fifth and Button sixth. Alonso would come back out but was way down in seventeenth. Coulthard was also involved as he ran into Alonso's debris and had to stop in the final sector. Not a good race for Red Bull. Klein's roll was caused by contact with a Sauber. As for Rubens he ran into the back of a Toyota. Lap five and Michael's lead was out to 1.2 seconds, with the Ferrari driver setting a fastest lap a 1m:21.673. But the big question was how much fuel was Michael running with.

WebberLap six and Kimi would respond with a fastest lap, a 1m:21.610. Nick was still in eighth just behind 1.6 seconds behind BAR's Takuma Sato. But right behind Nick was Fisichella, just 0.6 seconds. Lap seven and another fastest lap from Kimi, a 1m:21.488, to cut Michael's lead to 1.0 seconds. Montoya was 6.1 seconds behind Kimi. But Michael would respond to Kimi setting a fastest lap, 1m:21.479, on lap eight. There was little between the Ferrari and McLaren in their pace. Fisichella was still attacking Nick.

Mark was still in twelfth but was 40.3 seconds behind the leader after only nine laps. Kimi was right behind the Ferrari. Trulli and Ralf were still in fourth and fifth, Button sixth. Barrichello was down in fifteenth. On lap twelve Kimi would be the first to pit from second. Kimi would return in fifth ahead of Button. Alonso was down in sixteenth. Lap thirteen and Michael was 9.8 seconds ahead of second placed Montoya. Trulli would pit from fourth returning in sixth. Kimi was now in fourth.

Nick and Mark were still in eighth and twelfth. Barrichello would nearly collide with Karthikeyan in to turn one but was able to pass him to now be in thirteenth. Lap sixteen and Michael and Ralf would both pit. Montoya was now in the lead and Kimi was now in third. Ralf was now in fifth behind Button. Trulli was in sixth. Lap seventeen and Montoya had a 16.3 second lead over Michael. Raikkonen was now 2.1 seconds behind Michael. Kimi would lower this to be just 1.6 seconds on lap eighteen. Juan Pablo was pushing hard and would set the fastest lap of the race, a 1m:21.237, on lap twenty.

FW27Lap twenty three and Montoya would pit from the lead returning in third. Michael was again leading with Kimi second. The next lap would see Button make his first stop. He would be joined by Fisichella. Nick and Mark were now running in sixth and tenth. Fisichella was now in thirteenth 1.8 seconds ahead of team-mate Alonso. Ralf and Trulli were in fourth and fifth. Button was now in eighth. Lap twenty six and Massa would make his first stop. At the front Michael had Kimi just 0.7 seconds behind hi. Montoya was 4.4 seconds behind his team-mate. With Massa's stop mark was now in ninth.

Lap twenty seven and Alonso would pit from thirteenth. We had yet to see the BMW WilliamsF1 cars make their first stop. But the next lap and Nick would pit, joined by Villeneuve. Mark had yet to stop, going someway to explain his slow pace in qualifying given his heavy fuel load. Mark was now in seventh with Nick now in eighth. At the front Kimi was still right behind Michael. Doornbos would retire his Minardi out on the track in the first sector. On lap thirty Mark would be the last driver to pit. He would come back out in eleventh. Nick was now in seventh.

Alonso would go a lap down while rival Raikkonen was still challenging Michael for the lead. ON lap thirty two the top ten was Michael Schumacher, Raikkonen, Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, Trulli, Button, Heidfeld, Sato, Fisichella and
Barrichello. Trulli would pit on lap thirty four on what must be a three stop strategy. Barrichello would come in the next lap from tenth, returning in thirteenth. Mark was about to be lapped. Ralf would pit from fourth on lap thirty six. Lap thirty seven and Michael would pit from the lead. Could Kimi pull out enough of a lead to return ahead of Michael on his next pit stop?

HeidfeldKimi would pit the next lap and with a quick pit stop would come out ahead of Michael and in second behind leader Montoya. Lap thirty eight and Juan Pablo was 9.0 seconds ahead of Kimi with Michael 7.1 seconds behind the Finn. With Alonso unlikely to score points now was the time for Kimi to score maximum points to reduce the Spaniard's lead in the championship. Kimi would extend his lead over Michael to now be 9.8 seconds on lap forty. He would set a fastest lap, a 1m:21.219.

The Toyota's of Ralf and Trulli were still running in fourth and fifth. Kimi was closing the gap to leader Montoya but it would not matter as Juan Pablo would slow and make his way into his pit where he would retire. This would see Kimi leading from Michael, Ralf, Trulli, Button, Heidfeld, Sato, Fisichella, and Webber. We could see both Nick and Mark score points in the race. Lap forty three and Kimi's lead was now 18.7 seconds over Michael. Mark would get past Fisichella on lap forty four when the Italian ran wide at Turn four allowing Mark past and into eighth.

Massa would retire his car in his garage on lap forty five. But the Sauber mechanics would work on the car looking to get Massa back out in the race. The next lap and Kimi's lead was now out to 23.7 seconds over Michael. Button was just 1.3 seconds behind fourth placed Trulli. But Button would pit from fifth on lap forty eight. Kimi would make his next stop the following lap and would return ahead of Michael. Kimi's lead was 5.1 seconds. Massa would return to the track but was seven laps down. Nick was running in fifth and Mark seventh. Sato would pit from eighth on lap fifty two. Fisichella would also make his second stop.

WebberThe next lap and Trulli would pit from fourth. Nick would move into this pot while Jarno would come back out in fifth. Mark was now in seventh. Ralf would pit from third on lap fifty five. Nick would join the Toyota for his second stop. Ralf and Jarno were again running in third and fourth. Mark would make his second stop on lap fifty seven. Both Barrichello and Alonso would make their final stops. Button was ahead of Nick in fifth. Mark was running in seventh.

Lap fifty eight and Michael would make his final stop, coming back out in second ahead of Ralf. But Ralf was just 4.4 seconds behind Michael. Nick was 2.1 seconds behind fifth placed Button. Villeneuve would retire from twelfth at the side of the track with what appeared to be an engine failure. With ten laps remaining Kimi was 33.3 seconds ahead of Michael. But behind Michael brother Ralf was closing the gap to the Ferrari. Lap sixty two it was down to 2.6 seconds. Running in sixth Nick was not able to close the gap to fifth placed Button.

Lap sixty five and Ralf was now just 1.2 seconds behind Michael. With just four laps remaining it would be unlikely that Ralf would pass Michael. But Ralf continued to push bringing Michael's lead down to just 0.5 seconds on lap sixty seven. Fisichella would pit on the last lap to take a splash of fuel.

As the Schumacher brothers fought over second Kimi would cross the line to take victory in Hungary and reduce the gap to Alonso by ten points as the Renault driver would only finish in eleventh. Nick and mark would come home in sixth and seventh scoring five points for the BMW WilliamsF1 team. Michael would finish in second with Ralf third, Trulli fourth, Button fifth and the last point going to Sato in eighth.
