For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team the opening Friday practice for the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix
would see Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber set times that would see them
eleventh and
thirteenth fastest. Nick and Mark would only complete eleven laps between
them in the session.
The opening practice session would see the debut of American Scott Speed for
Red Bull Racing. With the opening of the pitlane several drivers would take
to the track for their installation laps, including both Minardi's and
Jordan's, Zonta and Pedro de la Rosa. The BMW WilliamsF1 cars would be
running with a new aerodynamic package for this weekend.
The Red Bull's of Speed and Klien would also come out joined by the Sauber
of Jacques Villeneuve and the BMW WilliamsF1 FW27 of Mark Webber. McLaren's
Kimi Raikkonen and BAR's Takuma Sato also went out to complete their system
checks.
With ten minutes of the session run the first driver to set a time would be
Toyota's Ricardo Zonta with a 1m:20.183. Scott Speed would set a time of
1m:23.226. But it would be de la Rosa who would set a quick time with a lap
of 1m:18.807. Zonta would improve with a time of 1m:19.633. The Friday
drivers would be looking at collecting vital information for their teams.
The previous lap record was a 1m:13.622 by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello.
Montoya, Button, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher, and Massa would also complete
their installation laps. Neither Ferrari or Renault had come out with nearly
twenty minutes of the session run. Jordan's Narain Karthikeyan would set a
time of 1m:22.069 to be fourth fastest. Both Minardi's would set times with
Albers leading Friesacher. de la Rosa would lower his time with a 1m:18.119.
Nick Heidfeld had yet to come out onto the track.
The Ferrari's were running with their new non-tobacco logos this weekend.
The
sidepods and the engine cover are white while the rear wing is made up of
small red squares. Alonso would complete his installation lap while de la
Rosa went even faster with a time of 1m:18.005. Trulli and Michael
Schumacher would also come out and Michael would get straight down to
setting a time with a lap of 1m:18.082. Both de la Rosa and Zonta had
lowered their times with the McLaren driver setting a time of 1m:17.688.
Zonta's time was a 1m:18.029.
Michael would lower his time to move into second with a lap of 1m:17.937.
With twenty five minutes of the session remaining the only driver still yet
to come out was Nick Heidfeld. Raikkonen would set a time of 1m:19.025,
1.337 seconds behind de la Rosa. Barrichello would set a time of 1m:20.642.
He would be joined by Sato with a 1m:19.736. At the front Kimi would jump to
the top of the times with a 1m:17.505, while team-mate Montoya a set a time
of 1m:19.363.
Sato would improve with a 1m:18.486. Team-mate Button was in seventh with a
time of 1m:20.180. Juan Pablo was in fifth with a time of 1m:18.358 but
Rubens would push the McLaren down one spot. Montoya was now in second with
a time of 1m:17.552. This would give us all three McLaren's in the top three
places. Scott Speed was down in ninth with a time of 1m:19.702.
Back at the front it would be de la Rosa who would move ahead of Kimi with a
time of 1m:17.255. Michael was now in fourth with a time of 1m:17.610. Klein
would set a time of 1m:21.933 to be eleventh and behind his rookie team-mate
Speed. With ten minutes left to run it would be Michael Schumacher who went
fastest with a time of 1m:16.872, while del a Rosa was also in the 1m:16's
with a 1m:16.872. But the Spaniard was able to beat Michael's time with a
1m:16.478. Zonta was now in third with a 1m:17.009.
Button was now in sixth with Sato seventh. The Sauber's of Massa and
Villeneuve were in eleventh and sixteenth. Ralf Schumacher was in eleventh
with a time of 1m:19.768. Nick Heidfeld would finally come out in the
closing minutes and would set a time of 1m:18.816 to be in tenth. Webber was
down in nineteenth with a 1m:20.566. Nick would improve to be in sixth with
a time of 1m:17.739. Zonta was in second with a 1m:16.584. Mark had also
improved to now be in eleventh with a time of 1m:18.388, but this time would
see him drop down to be thirteenth.
Juan Pablo was now fourth with a 1m:16.945. Mark would improve with a
1m:18.138 to be in eleventh. Kimi was now in third with Michael in fourth.
But Button would push the Ferrari down one place when the BAR set a time of
1m:16.710. Renault's Fisichella was in seventh while Alonso had yet to set a
time as the session came to an end. So for the BMW WilliamsF1 team this
session would see Nick and Mark in eleventh and thirteenth.
At the front it was de la Rosa from Zonta, Raikkonen, Button, Michael
Schumacher, Montoya, Fisichella, and Sato. Ralf and Rubens would complete
the top ten.. |
