In a change of form Juan Pablo Montoya would finish in second position after the Pre Qualifying session in Brazil. Ralf would finish in fifth. All the practice sessions did not give one any hope that they would perform so well, but both drivers did in the last qualifying for the WilliamsF1 team.

Brazilian GP Saturday Pre Qualifying

After a less than encouraging series of practice sessions the BMW WilliamsF1 team would turn things around in the opening qualifying session in Brazil. Juan Pablo Montoya would improve greatly finishing the session in second while Ralf was in an encouraging fifth.

MontoyaThe final practice session would see Michael Schumacher crash his Ferrari forcing him into his spare car. As they could not use his original engine Michael will lose ten grid positions. Michael would be the first out and would set a quick time, 17.8, in the first sector. He would go even faster in the second to finish his lap with a stunning 1:10.192. This would be faster than team-mate Barrichello's quickest time. Ralf Schumacher was next out and he would be 0.3 down after the first sector, but would set the fastest second sector time. Ralf would finish with an impressive 1m:10.258. Based on his practice times his first run was very good.

BAR's Jenson Button was next out. He would be about 0.3 down after sector two, and he would finish his lap in third with a time of 1m:10.607. Next was team-mate Sato. Takuma would be fastest in the first sector, loses 0.2 in the second, to finish in third with a time of 1m:10.373. Renault's Fernando Alonso was next and he would lose time throughout his lap to finish only with a 1m:10.637 to be fifth. Kimi Raikkonen would be fractionally slower than Michael after sector one, but would lose time in the final to go fourth fastest with a time of 1:10.440.

In his last qualifying session for WilliamsF1 it would be the turn of Juan Pablo Montoya. He would be quicker than Michael in both opening sectors and would finish his lap with an incredible 1m:09.862. Where did the WilliamsF1 team find this speed from? The Sauber pair of Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa were next out. For Giancarlo his lap would see him lose about four tenths in the last sector, finishing in sixth with a 1m:10.467.

For team-mate Massa his first sector would see him fastest, and even after losing time in the second he would still be fastest. But he would only finish second but having said that he did brake into the 1m:09 second times with a time of 1m:09.930. Renault's Jacques Villeneuve was next out but his lap would see him only manage tenth with a time of 1:10.708. Now it was the turn of Toyota's Jarno Trulli. He would finish in eighth with a time of 1:10.478.

Ralf SchumacherMaking his last qualifying runs for Jaguar would be Christian Klien. The Austrian would set a very slow time of 1:11.912 to only be in twelfth. Nick Heidfeld was the first of the Jordan's out but his lap did little to improve things for the Jordan team. He would be in eleventh with a time of 1:11.394. Team-mate Glock was next. He would fare little better going only fourteenth fastest with a time of 1:12.242. The Minardi's of Gianmaria Bruni and Zsolt Baumgartner were next. Bruni could only manage a 1m:12.916 to be over three seconds slower than the quickest time. Zolt would finish in sixteenth with a 1m:13.032.

We had yet to see the likes of Coulthard and Barrichello. The McLaren would be first out but David would lose time in the final two sectors to move into sixth with a time of 1m:10.3418, ahead of Raikkonen. Now it was the driver everyone Brazilian wanted to see do well, Rubens Barrichello. He would be slightly ahead after the first two sectors. He would snatch the top spot from Juan Pablo by less than a tenth.

making his final drive for Jaguar before joining the WilliamsF1 team Mark Webber would start his lap but could only manage fourteenth, with a time of 1m:1.230. The final driver out was Toyota's Ricardo Zonta. The Brazilian would finish in fifteenth to be several places behind team-mate Trulli.
