The BMW WilliamsF1 team would see their drivers 8th & 9th after the first Canadian GP practice. Juan Pablo would lead Ralf by the smallest of magins, but the margin to the quickest time was a massive 1.9 seconds. Early days with the second session giving a better insight into the teams chances.

1st Practice |

The opening Friday practice session would see the BMW WilliamsF1 pair of
Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher in eighth and ninth. Both drivers
would be some 1.9 seconds slower than the quickest time set by Ferrari's
Michael Schumacher. The FW26 certainly did not appear to be handling the
circuit well.
Jordan's
Timo Glock would be the first car out onto the Gilles Villeneuve
circuit, followed by the Minardi of Gimmi Bruni. With the mixture of
high speed straights and very slow corners this circuit places a heavy
burden on the cars braking.
The Minardi of Bas Lenders would go off the circuit early in the
session. other drivers including Anthony Davidson, Juan Pablo Montoya,
Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli, David Coulthard and Fernando Alonso would
all quickly complete their installation laps. Davidson would pull into
the pits just prior to starting what would have been a quick lap.
Glock would set the first lap time, a 1m:21.870, but he would be quickly
passed by Toyota's Ricardo Zonta. The Brazilian would set a time of
1m:17.620. Davidson and team-mate Jenson Button would take to the track.
Davidson would set a time of 1m:18.834 to move into second, 1.2 seconds
behind Zonta. But Anthony would put in a very quick lap, a 1m:16.217, to
go fastest. With twenty minutes passed only five cars have set a time.
Michael Schumacher would come out of his garage. Michael would quickly
move into second with a 1m:16.641. Just as quickly he would move to the
top of the times with a 1m:15.014 with Davidson some 1.2 seconds behind.
Michael was able to very easily set this very fast times. WilliamsF1's
Juan Pablo Montoya would move into third with a 1m:16.539, but this was
1.5 seconds off the quickest time. Juan Pablo would be joined by Ralf
who would go second fastest with a 1m:15.948. Juan Pablo would improve
with a 1m:16.029. The FW26 seemed to not be taking the kerbs well.
Jaguar's Christian Klein would set a time of 1m:19.760 as he tries to
learn what is a new circuit for him. Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta,
Renault's Jarno Trulli and Rubens Barrichello would take to the track.
Da Matta would move up to fifth position with a 1m:17.115, while Rubens
would move in to second with a 1m:15.918 but Trulli would snatch this
away from him moments later with a 1m:15.428.
Toyota's Olivier Panis would go fifth fastest while team-mate da Matta
had dropped to tenth. But Michael again would put out an amazing lap
with a time of 1m:14.158 to be 1.2 seconds ahead of second placed
Trulli. But Trulli would go down the order one place when Zonta would
set a time good enough for second, a 1m:14.952. With Davidson moving
into fourth Ralf and Juan Pablo were now fifth and seventh. Ralf was a
massive 1.841 seconds behind his brother Michael.
Michael would again lower his time with a lap of 1m:14.077. Is anyone
going to get near him this weekend? Rubens would improve to go fifth
with a 1m:15.514. Rubens would just as quickly set a time of 1m:14.418
to be second. The Ferrari team certainly have found their ideal setup
for this circuit such is their superiority. Button would move into
sixth. Rubens would have the fastest car with a top speed of 341kph.
Juan Pablo and Ralf were 337 and 336 kph
respectively. Gone are the days when BMW could boast about the power of
the V10 engine as other engines certainly must be producing similar
figures.
With ten minutes left in the session Renault's Fernando Alonso would be
sixth with a time of 1m:15.606. Davidson would continue to impress with
a time of 1m:14.519 to be third. The McLaren's of Raikkonen and
Coulthard were down in thirteenth and fifteenth. Michael would continue
to show his overwhelming superiority by again lowering his time to a
1m:14.062, quickly followed by a 1m:14.013. Rubens would also set a
quicker time, a lap of 1m:14.291.
Juan Pablo was able to set a time of 1m:15.298 to move just ahead of
team-mate Ralf, but the WilliamsF1 pair were down in eighth and ninth
positions. With the session closed the results indicate that this may
again be a Ferrari weekend. |
