BMW WilliamsF1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya would set the 3rd fastest time in Saturday qualifying for the Austrian GP. Team-mate Ralf could only manage 10th, with a time way off his practice best. As for the strategies that both drivers will adopt come the race, it will be interesting to see.

Austrian GP Saturday Qualifying

Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix would see very different results for the two BMW WilliamsF1 drivers, with Juan Pablo in third and Ralf in tenth. Juan Pablo would only be two tenths of the fastest time but Ralf was over a second slower and well behind the time he had set earlier in practice.

Juan Pablo MontoyaWith clear and dry conditions the second qualifying session would start with BMW WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher first to take to the track. His time of 1m:10.279 would see him take provisional pole but it was well off the time set yesterday by his brother.

This time was way off what he set in practice where he did a 1m:09.418, indicating that he is carrying a heavy fuel load. Next was Jordan's Ralph Firman who would go faster in the first section, but would lose time around the back part of the circuit. He would set a time of 1m:11.505.

Next came Minardi's Justin Wilson who would go third but was four seconds off the pace. For Minardi team-mate Jos Verstappen it would be bad news as he would run wide in turn one and would pull over to the side of the circuit. He will now start tomorrows race from the back of the grid.

The session would continue with Toyota's Cristiano da Matta sets a time good enough for second but half a second behind Ralf, with a time of 1m:10.834. The next group would be headed by Sauber's Heinz Harald Frentzen. Heinz would go third with a lap of 1m:11.307, but this was a second off Ralf's time.

Toyota's Olivier Panis would be next out. After setting a quick time in the first sector he would be two tenths down in sector two and would cross the line in second position. For Renault the first of their drivers would be Fernando Alonso who would go fastest in sector one but his Renault would go off the circuit and into the gravel, finishing with a lap time of 1m:20.113 which will see him start from the back of the grid.

Ralf SchumacherRalf's time at the front would come to an end when Sauber's Nick Heidfeld would set a time over half a second faster than Ralf, a 1m:09.725, and take provisional pole. Renault's Jarno Trulli would try to make amends for his team-mates mistake and would only just miss put of going first, with a time of 1m:09.890. Ralf would now be third.

After a short break Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella would go out and his time would be close to Heidfeld's, good enough for third. For Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia this weekend is another opportunity for him to prove his worth and his qualifying run would see him go third, ahead of Fisichella and Ralf.

For McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen his run would see him fastest in the first sector, fastest in the third sector taking the fastest time, over half a second up on Heidfeld. Next was team-mate Coulthard, who would be two tenths down in sector one, down again in sector two finishing in ninth after running wide in the final turn. His time was 1.7 seconds slower than his team-mate.

For BMW WilliamsF1 Juan Pablo Montoya would take to the track and after his encouraging times set in practice was looking for a quick time. He would be slower in sector one but would go second, well ahead of Ralf.

Next came the two BAR drivers, Button then Villeneuve. Button would take position five while Villeneuve would go tenth. For Jaguar's Mark Webber he would be aiming to further strengthen his position in the team with another good performance. But it would be a mistake on his part that would see him run very wide through turn one finishing fifteenth.

The final two runners were Barrichello followed by Michael Schumacher. Rubens would be three tenths slower than Kimi through sector one, but he would set the fastest time in sector two, but would lose time in the final sector and only take fourth. Next came Michael and he would be two tenths down in sector one, fastest sector two, and cross the finish line taking the fastest time by a mere .039 seconds from Raikkonen.

It was interesting to note that the fastest speed recorded during qualifying went to Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello. The slowness of the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers may give some indication to the fuel that they were carrying.
