Coming off the extended F1 break the Atlassian Williams F1 Team moves to the Dutch seaside circuit of Zandvoort. This circuit offers its own unique challenges but these are made even more so by the fact that this weekend is a Sprint format with its limited practice. For the Williams F1 Team they arrive with the encouraging news that Alex Albon will continue with the team in 2027. But aside from this, what with the challenges that the season so far has placed upon the team, it is far from certain as to how the Dutch weekend will play out. It is not expected to see any significant updates coming for this event so it will very much come down to what the team can achieve in terms of the setup of the FW48.

Ahead of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, Paul Williams, Chief Trackside Engineer, shares insights into the key technical factors that will shape the weekend.

What are the key technical challenges of Zandvoort?
• A short, twisty track makes overtaking very difficult, putting a premium on qualifying position.
• Zandvoort's "rollercoaster" feel, with significant banking and elevation change, loads the car unusually hard. This makes bottoming a constant management task and raises the risk of floor and component damage over the kerbs.
• The coastal location often brings changeable weather and strong winds. The dunes' sheltering effect means car balance shifts noticeably with wind direction and strength. The current forecast points to a high chance of rain showers, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

How do the 2026 regulations influence the approach this weekend?
• Zandvoort is similar to Budapest from an energy management perspective: high deployment, low sensitivity to energy.
• Two straight-line-mode zones have been added for 2026, both remaining active in the wet, albeit with delayed activation points.

What are the tyre challenges of the circuit?
• The middle compound allocation is well suited to a high lateral energy density track in typically cool conditions.
• A high forward tyre energy bias, but highly asymmetric - heavily weighted to the front-left, putting the focus on managing front sliding.
• Tyres are tricky to prepare over a short qualifying lap, requiring careful outlap preparation and traffic management. This is especially true in SQ 1 & 2 on the medium compound, where build laps are a possibility.
• In the Grand Prix, tyre degradation will be driven by high front-left wear and bulk overheating.

What are the strategic considerations for the race?
• Qualifying pace is more rewarding than race pace, as overtaking is very difficult at Zandvoort.
• Expect varied run plans in Sprint qualifying due to the difficult tyre preparation, with a mix of build laps, single cool-downs and double cool-downs across the field. Qualifying plans should be more aligned, with the soft expected to be a clear first-lap tyre.
• We expect the Grand Prix to be a two-stop, though the one-stop remains close. The hard is predicted to be the best race tyre, and most teams are expected to retain their two sets. The Sprint should therefore be predominantly a medium-tyre race, though some may run a new hard at the expense of their Grand Prix allocation to attack late.
• Safety Car and VSC probabilities both sit at 60%. Any intervention after lap 40 is likely to trigger a second stop for most drivers.
