Vowles: Sargeant is here on merit

Vowles talking to Sargeant

With the 2023 Australian Grand Prix just a few days away this race will mark the third appearance of Logan Sargeant as Williams Racings 2023 driver, joining Alex Albon. For Logan this is his rookie year in F1 so his arrival has generated a fair amount of discussion as to whether he has been the right choice for the Williams team.

Logan's original signing was put in place by the teams previous Team Principal Jost Capito but now in 2023 new team principal James Vowles has had to contend with the uncertainty as to whether Logan's signing was the best for the team.

in his previous roles at Mercedes Vowles' had come across Logan.

Vowles explained: "Logan came to Mercedes as a sim evaluation driver. I was interested in looking at him because he had performance, especially when you go back to his Formula 3 performance in an average team.

"At the time in Mercedes we had a good suite of drivers. So that was where my relationship with him ended."

Sargeant would finish behind Piastri in the 2020 Formula 3 title and would graduate to F2 and became a Williams test driver. Logan was able to secure the required points that would see him achieve his F1 Super Licence but there were quite a few mistakes on the way along with some notable performances. This would leave a degree of uncertainty over Logan's potential in Formula One.

"Williams funded his Formula 2 career," Vowles explained. " Williams funded him because they had deep belief that he was the real deal."

But for Vowles there was a concern that he had been rushed into F1 too soon. But his concerns over Logan's talent turned out to be incorrectly based. Vowles spoke of how the talented US driver has shown that his performances should see him take a place with the Williams Team.

Vowles explained: "From the first laps of testing, immediately you could see that the pace was there. I was a little bit reticent in wondering whether it would take him a little bit of time to get used to it.

"His first Grand Prix, the pressure on your shoulders is enormous and he took it in his stride. He was three-wide through turn 1. Normally in your rookie race, that ends up in disaster.

"He just dealt with it, with enormous amounts of maturity. And from then onwards, and I'm sure as you'll see throughout the year, he'll step forward."

Logan's first race with Williams would see him finish twelfth the highest placed F1 rookie.

Vowles added: "My reticence came from the fact that prior to F2 that it's difficult to really judge him. Now he's been in the car, I now have the ability to look at his data.

"He is here on merit and as a result of Williams investing correctly in him. So it just shows you that my previous life I was wrong and Williams were right!"

"He is here on merit and as a result of Williams investing correctly in him. So it just shows you that my previous life I was wrong and Williams were right!"

Of course Vowles would say that now. Fortunately, he's got good grounds for doing so. Sargeant has exceeded all reasonable expectations so far. It's very early yet, of course, but let's hope he keeps up the good form, stays within his limits (i.e. out of the barriers), and gets better and better.

I haven't thought it would be that huge a boost for Williams just to have an American driver. An American that's good looking, articulate, and (most importantly) consistently fast? That would be a whole different matter! He's got the first two nailed (if I'm any judge) and shows genuine signs of the third.

Overseeing the delivery of a significantly improved car and signing a potential star driver that other teams had overlooked. That's at least two things we (and Vowles) should be grateful to Capito for.

Am I the only one who is disappointed with the performance of the second car?

We are in the same position as last year but with £30mill less!

We have swapped one very nice but slow driver for another very nice but slow driver.
I am seeing no glimpses of brilliance on which to hang some hope! 1 car team again!

Give him at least half a season no top driver hits the top in the first season Lewis and Senna are 2 of the exception I can think of

Disappointed so far should be closer to Alex.

Alex is pretty good but still 3 to 4 ths off the best on the grid i would say.

Do you believe he is a top driver?
No signs of any brilliance at any point so far. Not a glimmer of hope!

That's why I'd give him this season to see if he can be a good driver

Hate to say it but agree, might as well had the money. He had a good start to his F2 career but as soon as he was linked with Williams he started to go a bit downhill and after a reasonable start in F1 is going backwards.

Boro if you are happy with one car under performing that’s fine but I aren’t. He needs to sort his sh* t out and rapidly make progress or he will have a short tenure in F1. The car is a solid midfield machine and he needs to be able to represent it as such. If it was a dog that would be different.

If he is any good he should be matching Alex at least.

I don,t see it, so time to look for a better driver ,we have the money.

The field is so close this year we need a racer who can pull out the stops and qualify
well on a Saturday Logan does not appear to be able to do this so far.

As it stands we are pretty much a one car team again this year.

A lot of people had doubts anyway before he joined us.

It was Capito,s decision anyway not our new manager , who i think would of passed on Logan
given the choice.

I know Vowles has said he may have been wrong about Logan, but his initial thoughts about Logan not being F1 material seem to be correct.

WTF is wrong with you people on here? The entire field in Q1 was separated by 1.2 seconds and you're moaning he's not good enough after what four or five races. Jeez people STFU and give the lad a chance. In the words of Taylor swift You need to calm down.

The thing is, if we had seen any glimpses of brilliance I would agree but the facts are the facts. However if he can turn it round that’s great too, it needs to happen soon though, but I will put money he can’t.

We might get an odd freak result, Latifi did, but ultimately F1 was beyond him, Logan is very nice, very marketable but ultimately looking very slow! FW45 and hopefully 46 deserves better.

I guess a different question is why are all the new drivers performing so disappointingly? Is it a lack of testing combined with how different these cars are to F2? Mick seemed ok but B only because he was against an awful driver, he was destroyed by K Mag. There hasn’t been an outstanding junior racer since George and Lando joined the grid.

No way is Alex 3 or 4 ths of the best, that would mean that FW45 is only 0,6 slower than red bull car in Miami.

I compared Q1 times of Albon, Sargent vs Albon, Latifi for Bahrain, Australia, Miami and Baku. Logan is 0,3s slowe in those races than Albon, but Latifi was 0,683s slower in the same races.

Guys, as much as I would have expected Sargeant to perform a bit better than he did so far, he’s a rookie and he needs time to get up to speed properly, which is made difficult by the very limited amount of testing.

Comparisons with Latifi are a bit pointless, the guy was still out of his depth in his third full season.

Also, Williams has now a few junior drivers in their academy and is in any case finally back to choosing drivers on merit and not money. Let’s wait and see: if Sarge doesn’t get up to speed by the end of the year, there’s nothing that prevents the team from replacing him. That’s already a huge improvement over the past years, when we had to endure incompetent drivers one after the other just for sponsorship reasons.

Comparisons to Latifi are not useless, Sargent is miles better than him allready and he still has potential to be better.

Yeah, but Latifi is just not a useful benchmark for any serious driver. That they are not in the same league is evident from their junior careers already.

There are a few drivers on the grid that could pinch a further tenth in every sector in the 45 so there is my extra 3 ths.

Put Alex in the Redbull and he would probably be 3 ths off what Max could squeeze out of it.
