2021 Could Williams turn things around?

By Andrew Hooper
January 1 2022

As we prepare for the start of the 2022 Formula One season time to look back at 2021. For me at the start of the year I had one simple question could the Williams Racing Team turn things around? With all the changes with new owners and new management could the team make any sort of progress in 2021. Thankfully we got to the end of the season and the answer was a positive yes. 2021 had been a far more encouraging season for the team ultlimately finishing eighth in the Constructors Championship. To come away from 2021 with a belief that the team could make progress was such a change from previous years. Now bring on 2022.

2021 Could Williams turn things around?

Latifi

The Williams Racing Team had suffered several years of disappointing performances, with the 2019 and 2020 seasons seeing the team finish last in the Constructors championship, such that many including myself wondered if this trend was ever going to end. But we would look forward to the 2021 Formula One season with much anticipation as so much had changed at the end of the 2020 season most notable being the departure of the Williams family from the management of the team.

For Williams Racing 2021 would be the first full Formula One season under new owners Dorilton Capital and also with new CEO Jost Capito.

It was obvious right from the time of his arrival that Capito was prepared to make significant changes setting up a process of reviewing the teams existing operations and identifying areas to improve. One of the most significant areas that he was to address was to allow for a clearly defined leadership structure within the team. Capito described this by saying: “one leadership, under somebody who has a lot of motorsport experience in all kinds of engineering, rather than car engineering or car development.”

So early on in the 2021 season we would see Francois-Xavier Demaison join the team as Technical Director. There had also been the indications of the early stages of restructuring the team to hopefully see it make progress during the season ahead.

But despite these encouraging changes there were indications that the 2020 FW43B updated to be the 2021 FW43B would still suffer as a result of its flawed aerodynamic concept. Such that there was doubts as to whether the car would allow the team to improve over the course of the 2021 season. But even with these concerns the team would set about and implement plans to continue with a gradual process of developing the FW43B looking towards better performances late in the season.

So the beginning of the season would see little success from the team despite developments for the FW43B and would not be until the Hungarian Grand Prix where despite one of their worst qualifying performances the team was able to finish with a double points scoring result seeing them move ahead of their main competition Alfa Romeo and Haas. The race would see Nicholas Latifi and George Russell finish in seventh and eighth positions.

The next race would see the team achieve its first podium in four years as well as another double points scoring result at the shortened Belgian Grand Prix. Following on from these results were further points scoring results in the Dutch and Italian Grand Prix. In addition to this the other promising sign was the progressions out of the Q1 qualifying period were becoming more frequent.

The team would go on to finish eighth in the Constructors’ Championship with 23 points, with this been the strongest season since 2017. As for how you would rate this performance for those inside the team it was very much the case of they were well ahead of where the team expected to be at seasons end.

Capito would comment on the season with Motorsport Week saying: “I would say from the development of the team, it was as I hoped for and expected.

“From the points and the positions, it has exceeded the expectations, from the very little development that was possible from last year to this year and under the Covid circumstances, it was even more difficult.

“Then finishing eighth, it’s overachieving our objectives from the beginning of the season.

“Personal highlights are Budapest, the first point-score after a long time for the team, and then the podium in Spa.

“These were also key moments for the team to find the trust back, find the motivation back, and to push even harder to prove that if we do courageous decisions, they can pay off.

“We don’t have to wait until other decisions and then follow, we are good enough to do our own decisions, and they can be good. I think those two races have boosted the team’s self-confidence.”

Even with the improved performance there were quite a few lost opportunities during the season where even more point scoring results were achievable. An eighth in the first race at the Red Bull Ring was lost as a result of an pneumatic pressure issue which forced Russell to retire followed by the loss of a tenth place finish after a late battle against Fernando Alonso in the second Red Bull Ring race.

On top of this was a noticeable loss of performance in the later races of the season which saw both Williams cars finish well outside the points as well as seeing both drivers Russell and Latifi suffer several DNF's late in the season.

Coming from this Capito even though he was satisfied with the teams performances in the 2021 season he stressed that there was more work to be done.

Capito said: “I am satisfied with where the team is now, with the structure we have in place, with the processes we have in place.

“It’s not all done, it’s by far not all done. But as we know, to get a team back to the top, it takes a longer time.

“You can’t have miracles, it’s hard work, dedication, it’s teamwork and a big team effort.

“It’s not done in one year but I believe we are on track and we’ve established a mentality of change so that change is accepted, that people try to get better every day. I think that mentality will help us to move forward.”

2021 was still very much a season of ups and downs for the Williams Racing Team despite having moved from the bottom of the Constructors Championship order.

Capito added: “There were really high highs and very low lows. We went through a lot of various emotions for the team throughout the season.”

“When we started to have 11th position, and we saw that we can race with some cars in the midfield, of course it gives a boost.

“You improve more if you’re in the position that you can fight with other cars and race others – and this is also what we found with race drivers: they’ve got a completely different motivation if they’re just running around at the back of the field or if they can be in a fight.”

“If you are in the position to take the points then if you can’t take them then you haven’t done your job. But as we were in the position to take the points, and finish in the points with both cars, then we started saying, ‘OK, can we do more?’”

Russell Podium

But 2021 would not totally be a year of memorable results for the team. At the end of November, its founder, Sir Frank Williams, died at the age of 79, sparking an outpouring of tributes from the F1 world. He had been one of motorsport’s most influential and important figures, battling adversity to take his team into a multi-championship winner.

For Williams the main driving force behind their success was to come from their soon to depart driver George Russell.

Russell's qualifying efforts were certainly a major incentive for the team placing his car in a position where in race s a points result was certainly achievable. The most notable of these been his second in Spa and third at Sochi.

In regard to the 2021 season Russell commented: “We’ve finished P10 in the championship three years in a row, so to finish P8 with more points on the board this year than the last three combined is a massive achievement. Hopefully it catapults them to even more success next year.”

For team-mate Nicholas Latifi his 2021 season was far more difficult despite securing points in Hungary. On numerous occasions he would struggle to match the pace of Russell but there were those moments where he did put in improved performances but they were overall far too rare.

Latifi would comment on his season: "The way we’re operating as a team is definitely much better. We’ve been taking more risks at various points, which has been shown by some of the good performances. There’s only so much you can do with the pace of the car we have, so we’re just trying to lay the foundations on that front, so when we do have a more competitive car and competitive package we’ll be able to capitalise on it.”

As the Williams Racing Team prepares for the start of the 2022 season there is certainly a resolve within the team that they will maintain and improve on their 2021 performances. On those occasions where the team was able to put everything together they have certainly shown that better days for the team may be within reach.

In 2022 Latifi will be joined by experienced Alex Albon, and with significant changes to the rules 2022 may offer an opportunity for Williams it’s the improve on their 2021 progress and put those years of disappointment well and truly behind them.

Damn right we will. Had enough of seeing third rate teams like Aston Martin and Alpha Tauri beating us. I'm predicting 4th in constructors for us.

4th is a BIG call after our recent form. Hey I'd take it, but that would mean beating one of the top teams to achieve 4th. We'd have to beat McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes.

I'd be wrapped if we could get 6th this year, 5th would be a dream. 4th maybe in '23?

Anything I side the top 6 would be an amazing achievement. I don't think we can ask for anything more.

I think 6th will be the best Williams can do this year.

Yes new car, newish drivers and just the whole uncertainty that this brings. But despite this if all the parts can fall in together I don't see why we shouldn't be aiming for 6th.

May not be as high as some would hope but still have to remember that we are on a process of recovery and it will take a few years and also it depends on how the other teams improve relative to us. Always the thing of the moving goalposts.

But the main thing is that I can't see us going back to the days where the team really struggles. We have all the things in place to have a memorable 2022.

The title says "2021 Could Williams turn things around?"

Shouldn't it rightly be "2022 Could Williams....?"

Looking very much forward to the 23-25 february i Barcelona

Anything higher than 9th would be massive improvement I'm been realistic the team are targeting 23 for massive improvement so I won't get my hopes up to high we will be at a disadvantage at first over the new tyres because we haven't tested them but roll on testing can't wait

100% Williams
WILL SUPPORT WILLIAMS AS LONG AS We HAVE A TEAM To Support

I'm slightly pessimistic and I give it 50% chance we will finish 9th or 10th in WCC- because we have one of the weakest driver pairings, one of the lowest budgets in F1, we haven't produced a semi-decent car since 2017 and we've underwent a leadership transition process while the 2022 car was already being designed so it's not ideal.

On the other hand, remembering 2012 and 2014, I give it 25% chance that we will be a positive surprise of the season once more.

I have no idea what the 2022 shake up will bring but the bitter truth is that Williams no longer "belongs" in the top5 or top6 teams in F1. If we get there, it'll be overperforming like Force India in some of their seasons between 2010-2017. There's no reason to think we should be upper midfield under normal circumstances, most of the teams are on paper stronger than us.

Yes 2022 not so much a case of turn things around but make the steps forward to take them higher up the championship order. So many factors come into play in that matter, drivers, car, management plans, even luck on the track.

Be nice to be able to achieve something like 6th but so much has to fall into place for that to happen. But to say that Williams can not achieve a position like this is ignoring the fact that the team is now positioning itself to do just that. Maybe not in 2022 but certainly in the years beyond.

7th and joining the backend of midfield on regular basis is enough for me.

After all we don't have a George in our car and we are the only team to miss testing with 18 inch wheels. It will hurt us for sure so anything better than last season is a sign of steady progress for me.

I would be happy if Williams finish 6th or 7th in the 2022 WCC but the big problem is the Williams driver pairing is very weak ...... Latifi and Albon are completely hopeless....(Sm17)

I'd like to think Albon being able to redeem himself.
I just don't see him as a guy that we can build our team around for the years to come. We do need a true talented youngster in our team that is affiliated with us. Not with the likes of Mercedes like Russell was. And I can't say Sargeant is going to do this either. Likely a good PR choice to have an American in our team at a time where F1 is actually properly setting foot on American soil. But he isn't nor ever will be our David to beat Goliath.

Its very simple.....

Just make the car BLOODY FAST, and give her a reliable engine while easy on the tirewear.

The drivers....Please surprise me positive.

The second half of last season, the Team started to pick up points. Would be nice to get one, or two cars finishing in the points on a consistent basis.
I think Albon may do alright, will have something to prove. Not sure about Latifi, hopefully he can kick on and pick up points during the season. When Fernando Alonso came back into F1, would have been fantastic if he had joined us. He was brilliant at Renault, drove for Ferrari and McClaren, his experience would have been immense.
I think we could pick up points here and there. A Podium, it would be nice, maybe not this season. Williams could finish 9th, at best 7th. Have to ask can we beat the likes of Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo?

Such low expectations rom some of you guys.

If the new design team is as clever as people are saying plus all the other good things happening back at Grove are true ie organisation, updated equipment and a good amount of money, then
i think we can build a fast car capable of running at 4th or fifth fastest on race day.

Merc engine and gearbox this year, and maybe rear suspension .

People in charge now who have a winning menality who are not afraid to change what does not work in a heart beat.

Albon should be able to extact the potencial of the new car.
Latifi is a weaker link and only his dad,s money will help for the cars progress but still should
be able to score some points with a good car.

Red Bull, Merc, Ferrari will be out of reach this year but we should be able to match Mclaren, Alpine AlphaTauri.

My expectations are low. I am simple allowing head room to be overjoyed. Expect nothing then be overjoyed with something type approach.

It doesn’t mean I aren’t positive though as a lot is in the positive column at the moment but then all the competitors havent been sat on their hands either.

Fingers crossed.

Please can we have a bunch of non Dorilton sponsors? And a less busy livery especially on the rear half of the car?

Oh and a good jump in competitiveness please... And maybe a VW exclusive brand deal for the next stage in engine regs please...

Not asking too much am I?

I think it'll be tough to finish 6th or higher, and would honestly be surprised if it happens. Past few years have been rough, and getting the max out of a very mature set of regulations has not been easy for Williams... Granted, the level of investment has been low, but I still wonder how the team will suddenly become more adept at finding performance on a new set of aero regs. That's my gut feeling, anyways.

Positives:
- Management teams seems to be on top of things. Capito and Co. have a plan.
- More prize money from moving up a couple of spots on WCC
- Hope that Dorilton can coax some partners into sponsoring. Not kosher, but who cares.
- New regs could bunch up the field, and that could reward driver talent.

Negatives:
- Driver talent is not top shelf. Or middle shelf either. I think George will be missed, although I still have some hope for Albon. His sabbatical might've been good for his psyche.
- Some worrying MIAs on the testing schedule and tyre tests
- Still plenty of empty visual real estate on the car, and our sponsors mentions are usually followed by "who the hell is that?".
- Financials are an eternal worry for this team
- Still owned by a financial investment firm. Yuck.

To further add.

Our new owners should provide us with a healthy budget.

New price cap should equal things up.

Less wind tunnel time for top teams.

Top people have been poached from Mercedes.

All these things should help equal up the playing field,so game on.

I guess hope it will be at least 110 Mill euro.

140 MILL euro is the limit this season is it not.

I think we need a full budget. Anything less and we may as well expect to be fighting Sauber/Alfa Romeo again for 8th.

Slightly off topic... Upgrading the facilities and factory equipment... Is that now under the cost cap or not? I think it is, but I'm having a crisis of confidence when it comes to the ol' memory.

We need a full budget or we aren’t heading up the grid in any meaningful way.

As an aside, how do the FIA even police the budgets? It’s impossible. Eg Merc can use any part of their huge organisation to do work for Merc F1 at below market pricing and no one would know. Every F1 team could do the same.

In essence; every update must come with a set of documents that clarify how many hours or labor it has taken to produce it. That is then being judged by the FIA and if neccesary, further clarification can be asked.

And I do not think that teams will want to go through great lengths to cheat. Because penalties will be severe. Even more than the 100 million of Woking abomination back in 2007.
