Austrian GP: Frustrating race for ROKiT Williams Team
By Andrew Hooper July 1 2019
The results of the 2019 Austrian GP again would have both ROKiT Williams drivers at the bottom of the order. George Russell would finish 18th and Robert Kubica 20th. Again this was a frustrating race kicked off by George having to start from the pit lane and even though Robert would make another good start and both drivers would fight with the cars in front for a short time but agian the lack of performance from the FW42 would see them struggle to match the pace of those in front and would be unable to avoid been lapped.

17th with Robert Kubica but team-mate George Russell would be forced to
start from the pit lane as the team made a change to his front wing to a
different specification. In terms of tyres Leclerc on pole would start on
soft tyres. Those behind him were on the medium tyre down to fifth,
including both Mercedes, where Norris would start on the soft tyre. The rest
of the top ten including Raikkonen, Giovinazzi, Gasly, Vettel and Magnussen
were also on the soft tyre. Both Williams drivers were on the medium tyre
along with everyone in the bottom half of the grid.
The grid would complete their formation lap and with the start it would be
Leclerc leading from Bottas and Norris. Verstappen would make a poor start
as Hamilton passed Norris. Robert was fifteen but would drop to sixteenth.
Raikkonen was now fourth followed by Norris, Vettel Verstappen, Gasly,
Giovinazzi and Magnussen tenth. For Williams Robert was running 17th and
George 20th having started from the pit lane. Vettel would pass Norris for
fifth while for Williams George was able to get past both Robert and Kvyat

and Verstappen would pass Norris seeing him now seventh. The order was
Leclerc, Bottas, Hamilton, Vettel, Raikkonen, Verstappen, Norris, Gasly,
Giovinazzi, and Perez tenth..
George would try to pass
Grosjean after Albon had passed the Haas. Magnussen on the soft tyre had
dropped down the order and would be forced to pit seeing him last. he was
running on the hard tyre while George was running in 17th and Robert 19th.
Lap fourteen and Leclerc was leading by 3.9s over Bottas. Magnussen would
get a drive through penalty for been out of position on the start grid.
Norris had passed Raikkonen to move up to sixth. Kvyat was able to pass
George for 18th seeing the Williams pair 18th and 19th. Vettel was now
fourth still on the soft tyre. Robert would pit on lap twenty two taking on
the hard tyre. He was able to get out still in front of Magnussen. Raikkonen
had pitted taking on the hard tyre.
Lap twenty three and both Bottas and Vettel would pit. Both would take on
the hard tyre but Vettel would have a slow pit stop returning down in 11th.
Magnussen would pass Robert while Giovinazzi would pit dropping to 16th.
Norris would pit from 6th on lap twenty seven. he was joined by Gasly and
Stroll all taking the hard tyre. Leclerc would also pit seeing Hamilton now
leading from Verstappen while Leclerc was now third. George would pit on lap
thirty taking on the hard tyre returning still in 18th. Hamilton would
complain about his front wing and losing time. Hamilton would pit on lap
thirty two and would change to hard tyres as well as getting a new front
wing. He would return behind Vettel down in fifth.
With the pit stops completed the
order would be Leclerc, Bottas, Vettel, Verstappen, Hamilton, Sainz,
Ricciardo, Norris, Gasly, and Raikkonen tenth. For Williams George was till
in 18th and Robert 20th. Ricciardo would finally pit on lap forty nine
switching from the medium to the soft now in 14th. Verstappen was now
challenging Vettel for third but Vettel was able to keep in front. But
finally he would pass the Ferrari using the DRS and then started to drive
towards Bottas in second. Vettel would pit on lap fifty two taking on a new
set of soft tyres. He would return behind Hamilton in fifth. Despite radio
calls complaining about issues with his engine Verstappen was able to get
past Bottas for second. The team had been able to fix his issue and was now
For Williams their race had again failed to
deliver despite what looked like a better start to the race for both
drivers. George was still running in 18th while Robert had continued to fall
back from the car in front Magnussen. At the front Verstappen would continue
to close in onto Leclerc. Lap sixty six and Leclerc was only 1.1 seconds in
front of Verstappen. But he would close with just a few laps remaining and
would eventually pass the Ferrari after a small amount of contact. Vettel
was able to pass Hamilton for fourth on the last lap. So Verstappen would
complete his final lap and would take victory in the 2019 Austrian GP.
Second would be Leclerc from Bottas, Vettel, Hamilton, Norris, Gasly, Sainz,
Raikkonen and Giovinazzi tenth. For Williams George would finish in 18th and
Robert 20th. Again it was a race that saw the Williams drivers start the
race well abut would drop away as the tyres became used. But the contact
between Verstappen and Leclerc was under investigation but after a lengthy
period the race win was declared for Verstappen.
