Team Summary:
The opening Friday practice session for the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix would
be delayed due to heavy rain. After a thirty minute delay the session would
get underway. There would be several Friday drivers running in various teams
including Renault, Torro Rosso and Hass. As drivers started to tak eot the
track they were all on the full wet tyre. Both Williams drivers would
compleet their installtion lap on the full wet tyre. Both Force India cars
would run on the intermediate tyre with forty minutes of the session
remaining. The track would empty but a few minutes later Ricciardo would
come out joined by Vettel, Raikkonen, and Verstappen all on the intermediate
tyre.
Ricciardo would set a 1m:55.601 to set the first time as more drivers
started to come out. Vettel would set a 1m:54.463 to go quickest. Raikkonen
was now second but Ricciardo would set a 1m:53.103 as the track started to
improve. Verstappen would set a 1m:51.201 to go quickest with the order
rapidly changing. Ricciardo was now second followed by Vettel, Raikkonen,
Hamilton, and Bottas. Ricciardo would go quickest with a 1m:51.194 whil for
Williams only Lance had set a time and was currently sixteenth. But he would
improve to be eighth then up to third. But Bottas would take this spot with
fifteen minutes remaining in the session. Under ten minutesa dn the order
was Ricciardo, Verstappen, Bottas, Lance, Raikkonen, Vettel, Sirotkin,
Palmer, Vandoorne and Ocon.
Gasley in the Torro Rosso was now seventh with Ricciardo's quickest time was
a 1m:49.719 but Verstappen would move ahead with a 1m:48.962. Bottas in
third was 3.0 seconds slower than the Red Bull. Hamilton would move up to
third behind Ricciardo with Gasly now sixth behind Lance. Alonso was now
third with a 1m:50.597 as the session drew to an end. The top ten was
Verstappen from Ricciardo, Alonso, Raikkonen, Vettel, Hamilton, Bottas,
Lance, Gasly, and Sirotkin. For Williams lance would drip down to eighth but
it was a frustrating session for Felipe not been able to set a time.
Felipe Massa:
Felipe would follow Lance out
also on the full wet tyre. Felipe would follow his team-mate back into the
pit lane. With thirty minutes remaining Felipe would return having switched
to the intermediate tyre. Felipe would complete two laps but would not set a
time and would pit. Felipe was out of his car with the mechanics taking off
his engine cover indicating some issue. Fifteen minutes remaining and Felipe
was still in his garage. It was reported by the team that he was having a
hydraulic issue.
Lance Stroll:
Lance would be first out for Williams running on the full wet tyre. Lance
would pit after a single lap. Lance would join his team-mate also on the
intermediate tyre. Lance would set a 1m:58.370 to move into eighth dropping
to twelfth then sixteenth. But Lance would find time as he complete more
laps setting a 1m:53.997 to be eighth. Lance would continue to improve
setting a1m:52.295 to move into third dropping to fourth. After a seven lap
run Lance would pit. Lance would drop to eighth as other drivers went
quicker. With the end of the session he would remain in eighth in what was a
good performance. |
