Canadian GP: Mixed FP1 for Williams Martini

Team Summary:
For the Williams Martini team both drivers would complete their installation laps. Rosberg would set the first time with a 1m:30.434. The Manor drivers would return to the track with Haryanto setting a 1m:25.231 on the supersoft tyre. Ricciardo would set a 1m:18.430 on the soft tyre. Felipe's first run would see him quickest with a 1m:17.065 with Verstappen second. Valtteri would move into second but Verstappen would go quickest with a 1m:16.997 on the soft tyre. As more drivers came out Raikkonen would go quickest with a 1m:16.138 on the supersoft tyre.

Ricciardo was now fifth and Vettel sixth. Wehrlein and Haryanto were seventh and eighth. The session would be red flagged as a result of a crash involving Felipe seeing him go into the barrier in braking for the end of the main straight. Vettel had moved into third prior to the red flag. The Williams team would be seen looking at the data trying to see what caused the crash. The session would restart with a rush of drivers coming out. The track would clear for a short time and with forty five minutes remaining drivers wild start to return. On his next run Valtteri would move up to second, dropping to third. But Valtteri would move back up to second. On the ultrasoft tyre Rosberg would set a 1m:15.746 to be quickest.

Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:14.980 with Verstappen second followed by Rosberg, Raikkonen, Valtteri and Sainz. Hulkenberg was now sixth with Valtteri back in his pit. A 1m:15.162 from Rosberg but he would remain second. A 1m:14.755 from Hamilton to remain fastest. Raikkonen and Vettel were fourth and fifth with Valtteri now sixth. Vettel was now third ahead of Verstappen. Valtteri would pit after his long run with replays showing him missing the final chicane go to the left of the compulsory bollard. The session would end with Hamilton fastest from Rosberg, Vettel, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Valtteri, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Perez and Alonso tenth.

Valtteri Bottas:
Valtteri would follow his team-mate for his installation lap and as he was wheeled back into his garage would say "All good from my side." Valtteri would follow Felipe out also on the supersoft tyre. His first lap would see a 1m:17.421 to be second. Valtteri would drop to fourth then fifth. With the restart Valtteri was out quickly running on the same supersoft tyres. He would pit along with the rest of the field but he would return running on a set of new supersoft tyres. Valtteri would set a 1m:16.606 to be second behind Raikkonen. He would drop to third behind Sainz. He would improve with a 1m:16.301 to again be second. He would drop to third. He was on a quick lap going fastest in the first sector but he would lose time when confronted by a slow Verstappen.

Valtteri would have to abort his taking of the chicane. Valtteri would pit currently fifth, having completed only six laps on this set of tyres. Valtteri was quickest in the speed trap with 338.2 kph. With under twenty minutes remaining Valtteri would return to the track still on the used supersoft tyres. Valtteri was on a longer run on the supersoft tyres. He had completed twenty laps on this set of tyres with a total of twenty nine as the session drew to a close.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would come out first for his installation lap running on the soft tyre. Felipe would be first back out for Williams this time on the supersoft tyre. A 1m:17.065 after his first lap seeing him quickest. He would drop to third but his session would go badly when he was to crash going into the corner at the end of the main straight. Felipe would say that he felt that there was an issue with the DRS but replays showed that it was closed. The car looked really unstable under brakes. His car would suffer major damage with the rear wing destroyed. Felipe would say: "I think I had a problem. I cancelled the DRS and lost the rear completely." Felipe's car would be recovered and returned to the pits. The word from Williams was that the DRS did not close properly. Felipe had dropped to eighth and then thirteenth. He would finish the session in fourteenth.
