Malaysian GP: AT&T Williams GP Preview
Malaysian GP
By Williams F1 Team
April 4 2011
The second round of the 2011 Formula One season sees the AT&T Williams team move to the Sepang circuit for the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix. After the disappointment of a double DNF in Australia the team has introduced solutions to their trasnmissions issues as well as bringing new aero updates for the FW33. For Rubens and Pastor this race should allow them to show more of their true potential.

I wonder what are those new things on the front end... New turning vanes?

My assumption is that the EBD's have greater advantage in slow corners since the discrepancy in airflow is greater there.
This should mean they aren't as beneficial in Malaysia as they were in Australia and that 'natural' aero is more important, which could bring Williams closer to the front.

I'm 99% sure it's not a flexi front wing, it may be a under nose front spliter like the one we had back in 2009.

pirelli's headman hembery is predicting up to four stops for most in malaysia!!!
if this happens it just makes the series totally ridiculous.

yes, I found the mix of 1, 2 and 3 pitstops in Melbourne far less interesting than in 2010...

BBC forecasts are showing much the same, heavy rain showers with thunder. Hopefully we'll get one dry practice session so the team can evaluate what ever new parts they've brought to the car.

ROFL, It actually should!
Unless it rains of course, then I think the EBD-teams will be at least 1s/lap faster...

still no word on the nature of the transmission issues, or if they were the same on both cars.
At least they mention a solution. A bit vague to my taste, but it's a start. I guess you could say that the issues only make it more difficult for other teams to copy the rear end of the car.

at this stage why would anyone want to copy the williams 'rear end'? there is no proof that it is winning design, in fact these teething problems may be just that, but then again they may be the precursor to being a mighty 'achilles heel'.

Absolutely K1, that was the (obscure) gist of my post. Why would anybody copy it I don't know... "Let's spend a ton of money on a potentially flawed, race-crippling design!"
I don't know why but thinking about this makes me giggle in a capitulated, palm-to-the-face sort of way. You've got to maintain a sense of humor when following Williams.
But seriously, I'm hopeful it's going to get better and that the layout will work wonders in the upcoming races. Sam was just trying to dissuade the copycats with those DNFs, right? No doubt he's achieving THAT goal!

I'd say refuelling was far more dangerous than pit lane speeding ever was. Search for pit lane accident videos and you get diddly squat... this one did tickle me though:

Can't decide whether you're joking or not rrafekaj. I'm gonna guess no. Must F1 wait for someone to be ran over in the pits and killed before implementing a speed limit?
The stops take 3-4 seconds to do now and you think cars should be allowed to go down there at racing speed? mechanics are trying to let their cars out as soon as possible it would be only a matter of time before an incident like in Hungary happened, can you imagine what would happen if sutil was coming down tha pitlane at 150mph when kubica pulled out and collided with him?
No i'd stick with the speed limit thanks, it considerably lessens the chances of someone being killed and that can only be a good thing.
Also that video you posted, not funny. Man getting hit flying by an F1 car isn't funny.
When wheels come off anywhere else on the circuit they have this funny thing called barriers preventing them from hitting anyone, even then it doesn't always work which is why they put on the wheel tethers to lessen the danger of them flying off. Now in a pitlane a wheel comes off and hurtles towards a crowd of mechanics busy working on their car is a recipe for disaster, the reason why no one was killed was because the cars are (wait for it) forced to abide to a speed limit keeping them at a low speed. So you saying get rid of the speed limit, is simply absurd.

Actually there was no speed limit in the Alboreto incident, but they introduced it for the next race in Monaco because of it. No one died, but four mechanics were hospitalized.

Pit lane speed limits are one of those things that it now seems absurd that they never had them - regardless of any refuelling/Imola '94 issues.
Last year I watched one of the classic GPs on the BBC sport website. It was sopmething like Hockenheim '87 or similar. Though I may be wrong.
The pitlane scenes were shocking. Mansell dropping the clutch on the Williams after his stop and unleashing 1000bhp in the pitlane, with people milling around and standing back as he flew past - it looked like there were no restriction on people in the pit lane then - it was packed. He must have been doing 150mph at the end of pit lane.
I am a purist, but it is completley insane. It was safer when there was no pitwall and drivers just drove back onto the track! With a tight pitlane though...just insane.
P.S I'm going to tweet Peter Windsor about his thoughts!

I'm not sure, but I would say the join points between the front wing and the pillars are different

Not sure how you can tell that, but lets say if they where narrower then that may allow more flex,in the front wing
i think we are wushfull thinking at present tho hehe.
It is a possibility.

So is jumping out of an aircraft without a parachute. Doesn't mean you should do it though.
The people you watch on TV aren't actors in an adventure film, they are real people with families doing a job. It was a wholly unnecessary risk, and perhaps still is. That's why pitlane safety continues to be a serious thing.
In short, it's not funny and don't be a moron.
